Chapter 3 - CLEMENTINE FOUND THE PHOTOGRAPH

Children notice what adults walk past.
Three days later, Clementine wandered into the library while Rebecca spoke with Elena.
She emerged holding an old photograph.
“Mommy.”
Rebecca looked.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
“This man has your eyes.”
Rebecca took the photo.
Her breath caught.
Samuel Hail.
Young.
Standing beside Antonio Falcone.
Between them was a third man.
Dominic frowned.
“I know him.”
“Who?”
“Victor Salerno.”
The name changed the room.
Victor had once been Antonio’s financial manager.
He disappeared thirty years ago.
Family legend said he stole money and fled.
The photograph showed Samuel holding a ledger.
Antonio smiling.
Victor not smiling at all.
On the back, Samuel had written:
The three of us know where the missing money really went.
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“What missing money?”
The old ledgers answered.
Antonio’s businesses had nearly collapsed after millions disappeared from several accounts.
Victor was blamed.
Samuel apparently discovered the money had not been stolen by Victor.
It had been redirected through shell companies controlled by—
Dominic’s uncle Carlo.
Dominic sat back.
Carlo had died years earlier.
But his daughter remained alive.
Genevieve Falcone.
Rebecca stared.
“Genevieve was born Salerno?”
“No.”
Dominic shook his head.
“Her mother was Carlo’s daughter.”
Silence.
Genevieve was Antonio’s grandniece.
The family connection was complicated.
But suddenly everything made sense.
Samuel had exposed Genevieve’s grandfather.
Antonio protected the family from public scandal by handling it privately.
Carlo lost control.
Samuel received the property interest partly in gratitude.
Genevieve grew up believing Samuel had stolen what should have belonged to her branch of the family.
And Rebecca—
Samuel’s daughter—
May you like
became the living reminder.
