Chapter 8 - GENEVIEVE LOST THE THING SHE CARED ABOUT MOST
Genevieve did not go to prison.
She had committed assault at the pool, and the incident was documented.
Rebecca cooperated with the process.
Genevieve faced legal consequences.
Probation.
Community service.
A settlement.
No cinematic life sentence.
But the worst consequence for Genevieve was social.
Doors closed.
Not all.
Enough.
People stopped laughing at her cruelty because Dominic was no longer there to make proximity valuable.
That exposed something painful.
Genevieve had mistaken fear for admiration.
Without power around her, the laughter disappeared.
She eventually wrote Rebecca.
Three pages.
Most explanations.
Rebecca read the first page.
Stopped.
Then mailed it back.
Attached:
An apology that explains why I deserved it is not an apology.
Six months later, another letter came.
One page.
I pushed you because I wanted you humiliated. I knew who your father was. I knew you had a claim to the property. I treated you as less because I needed to believe my family had been cheated rather than admit my grandfather cheated others. I am sorry. You owe me nothing.
Rebecca kept that one.
Still no relationship.
