Chapter 5 - REBECCA DIDN’T WANT THE MANSION

News traveled.

Not the family secrets.

Only the divorce.

Providence society did what it always did.

Speculated.

Invented.

Whispered.

Some said Dominic left Genevieve over the pool incident.

Some said Rebecca was his mistress.

That one made Rebecca furious.

She had been publicly humiliated.

Then strangers transformed her humiliation into seduction.

Dominic offered to have lawyers respond.

“No.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don’t want another powerful person speaking for me.”

He understood.

She moved out of the mansion.

That surprised him.

“You’re safer here.”

“I spent eighteen months here as staff.”

Rebecca looked around.

“I don’t want Clementine growing up thinking safety means living inside somebody else’s fortress.”

Dominic nodded.

Rebecca used no trust money initially.

The ownership dispute still needed final confirmation and restructuring.

She rented a modest two-bedroom apartment.

Clementine chose yellow curtains.

Rosie the stuffed rabbit slept beside her.

Rebecca returned to school part-time.

Business administration.

When Dominic asked why, she said:

“If I’m going to own part of a building, I want to understand the building.”
