Chapter 10 - The Glass Richard Lifted HimselfFive years later, Richard attended a small reception at Whitmore Estate.

The glass banquet table had been replaced with oak. Drinks remained under controlled service until guests selected them themselves. No family member could enter staff stations without authorization.

Richard was no longer chief executive.

He served as a nonvoting adviser while an independent board governed the company. Whitmore Maritime had survived, smaller and less profitable, but its financial reports no longer passed through one family’s private office.

Nora attended to present the final safety audit.

Afterward, a server offered Richard a glass of water.

He hesitated.

The young man noticed.

“I opened the bottle in front of you, sir.”

Richard felt embarrassed.

“You shouldn’t have to reassure me.”

“It’s procedure.”

Richard accepted the glass but did not drink immediately.

Across the room, Nora met his eyes.

She neither nodded nor warned him.

The choice was his.

Richard examined the clear water, then raised it.

The room did not fall silent. No wife watched from beside him. No executive waited for his judgment to weaken.

He drank.

When he set the glass down, it remained whole.

That ordinary sound—the quiet touch of crystal against wood—was the safest ending the Whitmore house had ever earned.
