Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Moretti Estate

One year later.
The summer sun hung high and warm over the hills of upstate New York.
The iron gates of the Moretti estate stood wide open, welcoming dozens of cars carrying friends, medical staff, community leaders, and local families for the annual summer celebration of the Carter-Moretti Children's Foundation.
Inside the grand dining room beneath the sparkling crystal chandelier, a long table was set with fresh flowers, platters of summer fruit, and home-cooked pasta.
No guards stood in the shadows. The dark, oppressive air of the past was completely erased, replaced by warmth, peace, and endless joy.
I sat at the head of the table, carving a roast chicken, looking happier and healthier than I had in my entire life.
To my right sat Clara, glowing and radiant in a white linen dress, gently resting her hand over her noticeably round, pregnant belly. We were expecting a baby boy in two months.
Beside her sat five-year-old Lily, dressed in a bright yellow dress, busily feeding small pieces of crust to her golden retriever sitting beside her chair.
Lily looked up at me, her brown eyes sparkling under the warm chandelier light.
"Mr. Moretti?" Lily asked, tilting her head innocently.
"Yes, sweet girl?" I smiled, placing a prime piece of chicken onto her plate.
"Are you ever going to stay awake all night again?"
I looked across the table at my beautiful wife, who reached out to squeeze my hand with a deep, loving smile, and then down at the little girl who had saved my life with a bedtime story.

I put my fork down, leaning back in my chair with a heart completely filled with gratitude, love, and quiet strength.
"No, Lily," I answered softly, a deep, lasting smile gracing my face as the golden afternoon light filled our home. "The lion finally knows he can close his eyes, because he's surrounded by the people he loves."
