Chapter 4 - Whispering Walls

Midnight descended on the Moretti estate like a velvet shroud.

In the sub-basement beneath the east wing, Leo opened the iron door to the family's private document archive—a room built with three-foot-thick reinforced concrete walls that had survived two wars.

Adrian walked inside, flanked by Clara, who carried a portable digital scanner.

"The ledgers Dominic presented to the board were forged," Adrian said, turning on the overhead fluorescent strip lights. "He used a shell company registered in Panama to mask the true ownership of the Rotterdam port authority."

"Look at the shipping manifests from two years ago," Clara suggested, pulling a dusty leather ledger from the steel shelving. "If he was using N-22, he had to buy the raw precursor chemicals somewhere. N-22 isn't sold on the street. It requires industrial chemical precursor orders passed through legitimate pharmaceutical import licenses."

Adrian pulled up the master manifest files on the computer terminal. His fingers flew across the keyboard with a speed and accuracy he hadn't possessed in three years.

"Here," Adrian said, pointing at a red line item from fourteen months ago. "Import License #884-B. Listed as 'industrial cleaning solvent' imported by Moretti Maritime."

"Signed by Dominic," Clara noted, leaning close to the monitor. Her shoulder brushed against Adrian's arm, sending a quiet, unexpected wave of warmth through his chest despite the cold concrete room.

Adrian looked sideways at her. Clara was focused, her sharp hazel eyes scanning the chemical formulas, her determination unwavering. She wasn't just a housekeeper caught in a crossfire; she was a woman of immense strength and brilliant intelligence who had stood beside him when his own blood brother had betrayed him.

"Clara," Adrian spoke quietly, his voice dropping into a sincere register. "When this is over, you and Lily will never have to worry about your safety or your future again. I will ensure you are protected for life."

Clara looked up, her cheeks flushing slightly under the bright neon lights. "I didn't do this for money or protection, Mr. Moretti."

"I know," Adrian replied softly, reaching out to lightly press his hand over hers on the edge of the desk. "You did it because you have a good heart. A heart this house hasn't seen in a very long time."

A loud metallic click echoed from the corridor outside.

Leo immediately pulled his suppressed sidearm, stepping toward the heavy iron door.

"Boss," Leo whispered, pointing to the security monitor mounted on the wall. "We have movement on the west perimeter corridor. Dominic's personal strike team just entered the grounds."
