Chapter 7 - Stripping the Pretender

At 8:30 AM, heavy rain drummed against the stained-glass dome of the estate’s grand hall.
More than thirty high-ranking members of the Moretti syndicate—captains, senior accountants, corporate attorneys, and board directors—filled the rows of carved oak chairs facing the raised marble dais.
Dominic sat near the front row, wearing his finest blue suit, looking pale and restless, constantly checking his encrypted phone for messages from his missing strike team that would never arrive.
At precisely 9:00 AM, the heavy double doors at the back of the hall swung open.
Adrian Moretti walked down the center aisle.
He wore a tailored dark charcoal suit, his posture tall and imposing, his dark eyes sweeping over the assembled men with absolute, unquestioned authority.
Beside him walked Clara Carter, wearing an elegant black dress, holding a leather briefcase, flanked by Leo and four heavily armed senior guards who reported directly to Adrian.
A wave of astonished whispers rippled through the hall.
"Gentlemen," Adrian spoke, his deep voice carrying effortlessly through the vaulted room without the aid of a microphone. "Thank you for coming on such short notice."
Director Vance stood up from the front row. "Adrian... you look remarkably well today. We were told by Dominic yesterday that you were considering stepping down due to your failing neurological condition."
"My neurological condition was not failing, Vance," Adrian declared coldly, stepping up onto the marble dais. "It was being systematically manufactured."
The room went dead silent.
Dominic stood up instantly, his face flushed with panicked rage. "Adrian! You're delusional! The stress of managing the empire has broken your mind! Guards, escort him to his private quarters immediately!"
Not a single guard moved. Leo and his men stepped forward, drawing their sidearms and taking control of the exits.
"Sit down, Dominic," Adrian commanded, his voice dropping into a register that commanded absolute obedience.
Clara stepped up to the podium, opening her briefcase and pulling out a thick stack of medical analysis sheets and financial records.
"My name is Clara Carter," she announced clearly to the room. "I am a former pharmacology research specialist from Saint Jude Medical Center. For the past three years, Mr. Adrian Moretti has been administered daily doses of N-22—a banned military-grade neurotoxin designed to induce synthetic sleep deprivation and memory loss."
She held up a glowing digital screen displaying the chemical chromatography results.
"This compound was purchased through Moretti Maritime Import License #884-B," Clara continued, her voice firm and unwavering. "Authorized personally by Dominic Moretti."
Dominic turned furiously toward the board members. "This is a setup! She's just a housekeeper! A nobody trying to extort money from our family!"
"She isn't a nobody, Dominic," Adrian interjected, pulling a silver flash drive from his coat pocket and plugging it into the podium's digital projector.
A massive screen on the wall lit up, displaying audio-visual recordings captured from the master suite's hidden security feed from three nights ago.
The video showed Dominic stepping into Adrian's dark bedroom, pulling a glass dropper from his suit pocket, and carefully releasing four clear drops of liquid into the porcelain teacup before placing it on Adrian's desk.
The entire hall erupted into shouting and outrage.

"Traitor!" Director Vance yelled, pointing an accusing finger at Dominic. "He tried to poison the head of the house!"
Dominic backed up against the marble railing, his eyes wild with desperation as he realized his three-year conspiracy had crumbled into dust in a single morning.
