Chapter 9 - Shadows Dissolve

Six months later.

The autumn sun shone golden and warm over the estate grounds, painting the surrounding forest in brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and copper.

The lingering atmosphere of fear and secrecy that had dominated the Moretti estate for three years was completely gone.

Down on the sweeping front lawn, four-year-old Lily was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the manicured grass, her joyful laughter bouncing off the limestone walls of the mansion.

I stood on the wide stone terrace, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, holding two cups of fresh coffee.

Clara walked out through the french doors, wearing a soft cream-colored knit dress, her hair flowing naturally over her shoulders in the autumn breeze.

I handed her one of the cups, my fingers lightly brushing hers, sending a steady wave of warmth straight to my heart.

"How are the new research medical foundations doing?" I asked, looking out over the lawn.

"We just approved forty new grants for pediatric pharmacology research this morning," Clara smiled, taking a slow sip of coffee. "And the free clinic in Brooklyn opens next month."

"Good," I said softly, turning to face her.

With Dominic serving a thirty-year sentence in a federal maximum-security prison and the syndicate's illegal operations permanently dismantled and converted into legitimate commercial logistics and medical enterprises, peace had finally settled over my life.

I reached into my jacket pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.

Clara paused, looking at the box, her hazel eyes widening slightly as her breath caught in her throat.

I opened the box to reveal an exquisite emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the golden afternoon light, sparkling brilliantly against the velvet lining.

"Adrian..." Clara whispered softly.

"Six months ago, a little girl walked into my bedroom with a gray rabbit and told me a story about a lion who was too tired to stand," I spoke, my voice deep and filled with a raw, honest emotion I no longer cared to hide. "Her mother gave me back my life, my strength, and my purpose."

I took Clara's hand into mine, looking straight into her eyes.

"Clara Carter, will you marry me? Will you make this house a real home for all of us?"

Tears of pure happiness welled up in Clara's hazel eyes. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She threw her arms around my neck, pulling me close, her lips meeting mine in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our future forever.

"Yes, Adrian," she sobbed happily against my mouth. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

Down on the lawn, Lily stopped playing with the puppy, looking up at the terrace with wide, bright eyes, clutching her gray rabbit against her chest.

"Mama! Mr. Moretti!" Lily shouted happily, jumping up and down on the grass. "Does this mean we get to stay in the big castle forever?"

May you like

I laughed—a real, booming, joyful laugh that echoed across the estate—and held Clara tight against my side.

"Yes, little lion!" I called down to her, my heart completely full of peace. "Forever!"
