Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM TRAP

8:30 AM.

The sun rose over the majestic skyline of Columbus, Ohio.

Inside the thirty-fifth-floor boardroom of Hale Meridian Manufacturing, twenty executive board members, attorneys, and news reporters gathered around a massive mahogany conference table.

Camera flashes flickered continuously as representatives from the three regional factory unions sat waiting for the historic signing.

Victor Langford stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, sipping black coffee, looking visibly exhausted and wildly nervous. Dark circles ringed his eyes.

He had tried calling Marcus Vance twenty times overnight, but every call had gone straight to voicemail.

Did Marcus finish the job? Victor wondered, his hands trembling slightly against his coffee mug. Or did something go wrong?

The boardroom doors swung open.

Preston Hale walked into the room, wearing a tailored navy three-piece suit, looking powerful, vibrant, and completely in command.

The room erupted into applause.

Victor’s heart skipped a beat. He stared at Preston as if seeing a ghost returned from the grave.

"Preston!" Victor forced a bright smile, stepping forward to shake his partner’s hand. "You... you look fantastic! I was worried you might be feeling under the weather after last night."

"I have never felt better, Victor," Preston replied, shaking Victor’s hand with an iron grip that made Victor wince slightly. "Are the final merger contracts ready for signature?"

"Yes, right here," the lead attorney stated, sliding four leather-bound volumes across the mahogany table.

Preston sat at the head of the table, pulling out his gold fountain pen.

Victor stood right beside him, his eyes glued to the pen, his mind screaming with anxiety. If Preston signed those papers, the merger would execute automatically, and Victor’s short position on the stock would crumble, bankrupting his offshore accounts within hours.

"Before I sign," Preston announced loudly, looking around the room at the assembled cameras and reporters, "I would like to invite two very special guests to join me at this table."

Preston gestured toward the main doors.

Ethan Brooks opened the doors, ushering inside Denise Carter and little Mabel, who was wearing a bright blue dress and holding her trusty box of crayons.

The room murmured with curiosity.

"Preston," Victor whispered urgently, leaning down. "What is a housekeeper and her child doing in an executive signing ceremony? This is highly irregular."

"They are the reason I am standing here today, Victor," Preston said coolly into the microphone.

Preston reached out, gently lifting Mabel onto the leather chair beside his.

"Mabel," Preston asked softly, looking down at the three-year-old. "Do you see anyone in this room who was at the dinner table last night?"

Mabel looked around the grand boardroom. Her big brown eyes scanned the faces of the executives, attorneys, and reporters.

Finally, her finger stretched straight out, pointing directly at Victor Langford’s face.

"That man," Mabel spoke clearly into the stillness of the room. "The bad man who put the poison in your red juice."
