CHAPTER 15 — THE GATHERING STORM WITHIN

The body heals on its own timeline, and the mind is an unpredictable tenant. Three weeks after the sentencing, Emily woke up in the middle of the night, drenched in cold sweat.
The dream had been vivid. She was back on the floor, but this time, the floor was dissolving beneath her, dropping her into a bottomless dark void where Madison’s laughter echoed from every direction.
She sat up quickly, gasping for air. Beside her, Ethan stirred instantly, his hand reaching for her out of habit.
“Emily? What is it? Is it the baby?” His voice was laced with immediate panic.
“No, no,” she gasped, pressing a hand to her chest, trying to slow her racing pulse. “The baby is fine. She’s moving. It was just... a nightmare.”
Ethan sat up, pulling the blankets around her shoulders. He didn't say it was just a dream. He knew better than to minimize the terror that still lived in her nervous system. “Do you want some water? I can get some warm milk, or we can just sit up for a bit.”
“Just hold me,” she whispered.
As he wrapped his strong arms around her, Emily felt a sudden wave of guilt. Ethan had been her rock, her shield, her nurse, and her defender. But looking at the dark circles permanent under his eyes, she realized he was running on fumes. He hadn't slept a full night since the attack. Every time she rolled over in bed, he woke up, checking her breathing, checking her temperature.
“Ethan,” she said quietly into the dark room. “You need to rest too. You can't keep carrying me like this.”
“I’m fine,” he said automatically, his voice thick with exhaustion.
“You’re not,” she insisted gently, turning her head to look at him. “You’re exhausted. We’ve won the court case, Madison is gone, but you're still acting like she’s standing outside the window with a knife.”
Ethan was quiet for a long moment. The silence stretched between them, heavy and honest.

“I failed to protect you once, Emily,” he said, his voice dropping to a raw, painful whisper. “I knew what Madison was like. I knew she was volatile. I should have been there that day. I should have never left you alone in that house with her. Every time I close my eyes, I see you lying on that floor. I can't let it happen again.”
Emily’s heart broke for him. The realization hit her that while she had been recovering from the physical trauma, Ethan had been quietly drowning in survivor’s guilt.
