CHAPTER 21 — THE ECHO IN THE PARK

Summer arrived, bringing long, warm days and afternoons spent at the local park. Clara was now crawling with an alarming speed, requiring both Emily and Ethan to be constantly alert.

One afternoon, while Ethan was at work, Emily took Clara to the park’s toddler area. The sun was bright, and the sound of children’s laughter filled the air. Emily sat on a wooden bench, watching Clara try to eat a piece of clover she had plucked from the grass.

“No, sweetie, we don't eat the grass,” Emily laughed, gently taking the green stem from her daughter’s chubby fingers.

“Emily?”

The voice was tentative, coming from behind the bench. Emily’s muscles tightened instantly. She turned around slowly, her defensive instincts flaring.

It wasn't Madison, or her parents. It was a young woman named Chloe, who had worked as a receptionist at the design agency where Madison had been a partner. Chloe had been a peripheral witness during the investigation, having seen Madison’s erratic behavior in the weeks leading up to the attack.

“Chloe,” Emily said, relaxing her shoulders slightly but keeping her arms close to Clara. “Hi.”

“I’m sorry to bother you,” Chloe said quickly, looking uncomfortable. “I just... I saw you from across the park, and I wanted to see how you were doing. And to see the baby.” She looked at Clara, her eyes softening. “She’s beautiful, Emily.”

“Thank you,” Emily said politely. “We’re doing well. We’re happy.”

Chloe nodded, shifting her weight. “I wanted to tell you... after the trial, the agency collapsed. None of us wanted to be associated with that name anymore. We all left. I started my own boutique firm last month. I just wanted you to know that the toxicity she created... it didn't last. Everyone moved on to better things.”

Emily looked at the young woman. She realized that Madison’s actions hadn't just impacted her; they had rippled out, affecting everyone who had been trapped in her orbit of manipulation.

“I’m glad to hear that, Chloe,” Emily said genuinely. “I hope your new firm is successful.”

“Thank you,” Chloe said, looking relieved. “Take care of yourself, Emily.”

As Chloe walked away, Emily looked down at Clara, who was now occupied with trying to catch a passing butterfly. The encounter hadn't triggered a panic attack. It hadn't made her want to run and hide. It was just a conversation with a person from her past life.

The past was losing its teeth. It couldn't bite her anymore.
