CHAPTER 27 — THE ARRIVAL OF THE BOY

The birth of their son was as dramatic as a summer storm—fast, intense, and over quickly. Leo was born on an August afternoon, a robust baby boy with a loud cry and Ethan’s dark eyes.
Clara was brought to the hospital by Ethan’s mother to meet her new brother. She approached the bed with caution, her eyes wide as she looked at the tiny bundle in Emily’s arms.
“Is he mine?” Clara asked, poking Leo’s tiny, fistlike hand.
“He’s ours,” Emily smiled, leaning down so Clara could kiss the baby’s forehead. “His name is Leo.”
“He’s very small,” Clara observed, with the authoritative tone of a threeyearold. “Can he play blocks?”
“Not yet,” Ethan laughed, sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling Clara into his lap. “But he will. You have to teach him how to build the big towers.”
Looking at her family gathered around the hospital bed, Emily felt a profound sense of closure. The room was filled with the sounds of a normal, expanding life—the chatter of a toddler, the quiet hum of the air conditioner, the soft breathing of a newborn.

The medical team who delivered Leo knew nothing of Emily’s past. To them, she was just another healthy mother delivering a healthy child. She wasn't the ‘pregnancy assault survivor’ anymore. She was just a mom.
As the sun set over the city, casting long shadows through the hospital window, Emily held her son close. She had survived the fall, she had survived the recovery, and now, she was thriving in the afterglow of her strength.
