CHAPTER 9 — THE STORY THEY TRIED TO SPIN

HAPTER 10 — THE STORY THEY TRIED TO SPIN
Morning came without feeling like morning.
Hospitals don’t change with time the way the outside world does. They just keep existing—beeping, humming, waiting.
Ethan hadn’t left Emily’s side.
Not once.
His hand was still wrapped around hers, careful not to disturb the IV lines. Every time her monitor shifted even slightly, his eyes snapped up.
Alive.
Still alive.
That was the only sentence his mind was capable of repeating.
A soft knock came at the ICU door.
Ethan didn’t look away from Emily. “If this is another form, I’m not signing anything until she wakes up.”
“It’s the police,” a voice said gently.
He finally turned his head.
Two officers stood there again, but this time their posture was different.
More formal.
More serious.
And behind them—Madison.
Ethan stood instantly.
The chair scraped hard against the floor.
“No,” he said immediately.
One officer raised a hand. “Mr. Carter, this is a supervised questioning. We need statements clarified from all parties.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “She’s not a party. She’s a suspect.”
Madison flinched slightly at that word.
But she recovered quickly.
Tears appeared almost on cue.
“I didn’t mean to hurt her,” she said softly. “It was an accident.”
Ethan laughed once.
Sharp. Disbelieving.
“An accident,” he repeated.
Madison nodded quickly. “She fell. I tried to catch her—”
“Stop,” Ethan cut in.
The room went still.
Even the monitors seemed louder.
He pointed toward Emily’s bed without looking away from Madison.
“That woman right there,” he said, voice low, “has a fractured skull, internal trauma, and is in a medically induced coma.”
A pause.
“And you’re calling that an accident?”
Madison’s eyes filled again. “Ethan, please—”
“Don’t say my name,” he snapped.
The officers exchanged a look.
One of them stepped forward slightly. “Sir, we are here to establish intent. We have reviewed preliminary footage, but we need verbal confirmation.”
Ethan didn’t hesitate.
“She kicked my pregnant wife in the stomach,” he said.
“She shoved her head into a coffee table.”
“And the only thing that came out of that house afterward was lies.”
Madison shook her head violently. “That’s not what happened!”
Ethan turned slowly toward her.
And when he spoke again, his voice was terrifyingly calm.
“Then explain the footage.”
Silence.
That word changed her expression instantly.
Just for a fraction of a second.
But Ethan saw it.
The crack.
The fear.
The realization that she wasn’t in control of the narrative anymore.
“I—” she started.
But no words came.
Because truth doesn’t need rehearsal.
One of the officers cleared his throat. “We will be reviewing all evidence thoroughly.”
Madison turned quickly toward them. “She’s dramatic! She always does this! She exaggerates everything!”
Ethan stepped closer.
Close enough that she instinctively stepped back.
“You want to know what she did wrong?” he asked quietly.
Madison hesitated.
Ethan’s eyes didn’t blink.
“She survived you.”
The room went silent again.
Even the officers didn’t speak.
Madison’s face tightened. “You’re making me look like a monster.”
Ethan tilted his head slightly.
“No,” he said.
“You did that yourself.”
Later that day, Ethan was called into a separate consultation room.
A lawyer was already waiting.
Gray suit. Calm expression. Open folder.
“Mr. Carter,” she said, “I’ve been retained to represent Emily’s medical legal interests.”
Ethan nodded once. “Good.”
She studied him. “We have reviewed all available evidence. The incident is being classified as aggravated assault with potential intent to cause serious bodily harm.”
Ethan didn’t react.
Not surprise.
Not relief.
Just confirmation.
“Good,” he said again.
The lawyer hesitated. “There is also the matter of family testimony. Her parents are claiming the incident was an accident and that Emily has a history of emotional instability.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened immediately.
“Of course they are.”
The lawyer leaned forward slightly. “We will need to counter that narrative quickly.”
Ethan stood up.
“No,” he said.
The lawyer blinked. “No?”
He looked toward the door.
Toward Emily’s room.
And when he spoke again, his voice was quiet—but absolute.
“We’re not countering anything.”
A pause.
“We’re exposing everything.”
Back in the ICU, Emily’s monitor suddenly shifted.
Beep… beep… beep—
Then a slight irregular spike.
A nurse rushed in immediately.
“Neurological response?”
Ethan shot up from his chair. “What is it?”
The nurse leaned in carefully. “There’s movement in her fingers.”
Ethan froze.
“Her fingers?” he repeated.
“Yes,” the nurse confirmed softly. “Very slight, but it’s there.”
He moved immediately to her side.
“Emily?” he whispered.
Nothing at first.
Then—
a faint twitch.
Barely noticeable.
But real.
Ethan’s breath caught violently.
“She’s coming back,” he whispered.
The nurse didn’t confirm it.
But she didn’t deny it either.
Instead, she adjusted the monitor and said softly:
“We’ll keep watching.”
Ethan leaned closer.
“You hear me?” he whispered to Emily.
“I’m here.”
A pause.
Then quieter:
“And I’m not done yet.”
That evening, outside the hospital, the story began changing.
Security footage leaked.
Not fully.
But enough.
Enough to show falling.
Enough to show impact.
Enough to show Madison stepping back instead of helping.
And social media did what it always does.
It decided quickly.
Too quickly.
By nightfall, headlines had formed.
Pregnant Woman Hospitalized After Alleged Domestic Assault in Family Home
And inside the ICU—
Emily’s hand moved again.
This time stronger.
Ethan grabbed it immediately.
“Hey,” he whispered urgently. “Stay with me.”
Her fingers curled faintly around his.
Just barely.
But enough.
And for the first time since that day—
May you like
Ethan allowed himself to believe something dangerous.
That she might actually wake up.
