CHAPTER 24 — THE RETURN OF FLIGHT
For her thirtieth birthday, Ethan surprised Emily with a gift that made her gasp. It was a pair of plane tickets to Paris.
“We haven't taken a real trip since... well, ever,” Ethan said, holding the tickets out to her. “My mother has already agreed to watch Clara for a week. We’re going to spend seven days eating croissants, looking at art, and not checking the baby monitor every five minutes.”
Emily looked at the tickets, her mind flashing to the practical difficulties—packing, flying, being away from Clara. But then she looked at Ethan’s hopeful, loving face. He had planned this for months, wanting to give her back the sense of adventure they had lost.
“Paris?” she whispered. “Are you serious?”
“Dead serious,” he smiled. “It’s time to see the world again, Emily. We’ve spent two years protecting our corner of it. It’s safe enough for us to leave it for a little while.”
The trip was a revelation. Walking down the cobblestone streets of the Marais, holding Ethan’s hand under a light European drizzle, Emily felt a sense of freedom she hadn't realized she was missing. They spent hours in the Louvre, standing before massive canvases of historical triumphs and tragedies.
One evening, they sat at an outdoor cafe near the Seine, watching the Eiffel Tower light up with thousands of sparkling bulbs.
“I used to think that survival meant staying in one place where nothing could touch me,” Emily said, swirling the red wine in her glass. “But being here... I realize survival means being able to move again. To explore. To not be afraid of the distance.”

They toasted to the future, the sparkling tower reflecting in their glasses. They were no longer the victims of a tragedy; they were tourists in a vast, beautiful world, looking forward to going home to their daughter, but completely alive in the present moment.
