Chapter 3 - MADISON’S CONDITION WAS REAL
I learned something important three days later.
Madison had truly been sick.
That mattered.
I did not want my anger turning a six-year-old girl into a villain.
She had been diagnosed at three with a rare autoimmune disorder.
The initial treatment was expensive.
Some specialists were out of network.
Nicole had panicked.
Our parents had panicked too.
That part was human.
Then came the decision that was not.
Instead of asking me, they decided I would refuse.
Mom later said:
“You had just lost Michael.”
As though grief made consent optional.
Dad said:
“You had more money than Nicole.”
As though capacity created entitlement.
Nicole said:
“Madison could have died.”
And that was the hardest sentence.
Because it was possible to understand the terror inside it.
Without accepting what came next.
They took $22,000 first.
Then another $17,000.
Then $14,500.
Each withdrawal became easier.
Eventually, Madison’s condition stabilized.
But the withdrawals continued.
That was where the story changed.
