Chapter 8 - EVAN DIDN’T TRY TO RESCUE ME

Evan surprised me throughout all of it.
Not by fixing anything.
By refusing to take over.
When I cried, he sat.
When I got angry, he listened.
When I asked what he thought, he answered.
But he never said:
“I’ll handle it.”
That mattered.
After years of family members deciding what I could handle, I did not need another man making decisions for me.
One night, I asked:
“Are you scared to marry into this?”
He laughed.
“I’m not marrying your parents.”
“Technically, family comes with marriage.”
“So do smoke detectors.”
I stared.
“What?”
“You notice problems and maintain boundaries.”
I laughed for the first time in days.
Then he became serious.
“I’m marrying you.”
He looked toward Lily’s room.
“And I’m choosing a life that includes her.”
No grand promise to replace Michael.
No claim to fatherhood.
Just presence.

That was enough.
