Chapter 4 - THE HOTEL RECEIPTS

The hotel receipts were the first crack in Nicole’s defense.
Not hospitals.
Not clinics.
A luxury resort in Savannah.
Three nights.
Spa charges.
Restaurant charges.
A suite.
Nicole stared at the records when investigators confronted her.
“That wasn’t me.”
Dad said nothing.
Mom looked away.
The reservation was in their names.
My parents.
They had used Lily’s money for an anniversary trip.
$4,800.
Then another charge.
A new refrigerator.
Mom’s house.
Then:
$7,200 toward Dad’s truck.
I felt physically sick.
The medical emergency had become permission.
Once they crossed the line for something they could justify emotionally, they stopped seeing the line.
When Nicole learned about the non-medical spending, her face changed.
“You told me every withdrawal after Madison got better was repayment.”
Mom whispered:
“Nicole—”
“No.”
She stood.
“You said you were putting the money back.”
Dad snapped:
“Sit down.”
Nicole did not.
That was new.
“You used her account too?”
Silence.
For years, Nicole had believed she was the daughter being protected.
Now she realized Mom and Dad had used her crisis as camouflage.

The “perfect princess” had not been the only one manipulated.
