Chapter 9 - THE MONEY CAME BACK SLOWLY
There was no magical overnight restitution.
Dad and Mom did not produce eighty thousand dollars from a hidden drawer.
The process took time.
Accounts were traced.
Assets evaluated.
Claims negotiated.
Some money was recovered.
Some required repayment plans.
Dad sold the truck.
Mom sold jewelry.
A second property they jointly owned was refinanced.
Nicole agreed to repay the portion clearly tied to Madison’s treatment over time.
I did not forgive that debt simply because the reason had been medical.
But I structured it differently.
No punitive interest.
No impossible schedule.
Madison would not lose stability because adults had made terrible choices around her.
That was my line.
Accountability without punishing a child.
My parents received less mercy.
Not because I loved Nicole more.
Because they continued spending after the crisis passed.
