Chapter 60: Adrian’s Second Ledger
Adrian Vale returned at midnight without a helicopter. He appeared in the lobby of Rebecca Vance’s office building as if locks were a matter of etiquette. Keene placed federal agents in the hallway before Ethan entered the conference room, where Adrian sat with a smaller black ledger and an untouched cup of tea.
He explained that Horizon was not a single organization but wreckage: old families, banks, private clinics, research foundations, and criminal brokers feeding from the same sealed trough. Some wanted records destroyed, some wanted money, some wanted heirs, and a few wanted the machine exposed because dead machines could no longer collect debts.
Then Adrian revealed his own wound. His sister, Anca Ionescu, had died in the Horizon ward in 1988. Her child vanished. Adrian had spent thirty years chasing rumors until ledgers proved more durable than revenge. The confession did not make him safe, but it made his obsession human.
The second ledger contained names of living Horizon children. Confirmed placements. Probable placements. Current identities. Daniel Hart was listed as placed with Richard and Patricia Miller. Noah appeared as collateral Hart-line claimant. Beneath them was a red-circled note: ANCA IONESCU CHILD — probable placement: VANCE NETWORK.
Rebecca went pale. Her adoption was sealed; her parents had told her privacy protected a young birth mother. Adrian looked at her with sudden, dangerous hope and said she had his sister’s eyes. Rebecca slammed her palm on the table and told him he did not get that sentence without proof.
Keene demanded the ledger enter federal custody. Adrian refused the original but offered copies, arguing the system was threaded with Horizon families and leaks could warn powerful names before warrants arrived. Rebecca, shaken but still precise, recommended special master review. Ethan watched her choose the case even as the case reached for her own life.
