Chapter 61

Chapter 61: Horizon Recovery
By breakfast, the story could no longer be contained. Rebecca’s filing triggered emergency notices across three jurisdictions. Horizon Recovery tried to withdraw and refile under seal. Keene’s financial crimes unit froze related accounts. Patricia’s name appeared on a transfer authorization connecting her foundation to a Horizon consultant days before Richard’s death.
The news began using words Ethan hated: heir, bloodline, scandal child, Horizon boy. Marisol unplugged the television in the safe suite and declared there would be no news in the child space. When Noah asked if he was on TV, Ethan answered, “Not in this room,” and the boy accepted that boundary as if it mattered.
Horizon Recovery sent a settlement offer: private arbitration, compensation, funded guardianship support, sealed medical review, and silence regarding original ward records. Eighty million dollars sat in the initial pool. The number did not tempt Ethan. It clarified how much exposure they feared.
Rebecca warned refusal meant public litigation, attacks on Lauren’s stability, attacks on Ethan’s motives, questions about Noah’s bloodline, and possible attempts to remove Rebecca because of her own connection to Adrian’s ledger. Ethan asked how many living names existed. Adrian answered: twenty-eight confirmed, more than one hundred probable.
No sealed settlement, Ethan said. Keene supported the decision because the settlement would create a private document channel beyond subpoenas. Rebecca prepared a response designed to make the court hate one phrase above all others: Noah as an asset.
At the hearing, Patricia’s counsel called her a grieving widow framed by opportunists. Rebecca played Patricia’s culvert recording: You have something that belongs to me. Keene submitted the financial transfer to Horizon Recovery. The judge barred Patricia from contact with Horizon affiliates and held her pending full review.
That evening Ethan returned with sandwiches instead of soup. Noah asked whether winning meant Grandma stopped. Ethan told him no. Noah nodded, unsurprised, and said she knocked until people said sorry. Ethan placed the food between them and answered, “Then we stop saying sorry for locked doors.”

Money tried to arrive dressed as mercy. Eighty million dollars sounded enormous until measured against the number of mothers told their babies were dead, the number of children renamed, and the number of institutions that had profited from silence.
