Chapter 64: Patricia’s Better Room
Patricia’s better room arrived as a Senate inquiry. Senator Alden Price, whose grandfather’s name appeared twice in the Horizon ledger, announced concern over federal overreach and sealed evidence. He used Noah’s name once at a press conference before Rebecca threatened emergency sanctions and Marisol publicly requested child privacy.
The message was clear. Patricia might be detained, but the world she belonged to had begun defending itself. Keene received calls from supervisors who chose careful words. Ortiz received motions from firms with century-old letterheads. Rebecca received anonymous attacks on her possible Horizon connection.
Ethan received a letter from Patricia through counsel. It was tender, which made it more dangerous. She reminded him who sat beside him during childhood pneumonia, who chose his schools, who taught him to survive rooms where lesser men were eaten alive. Evelyn Hart gave birth to you, Patricia wrote. I made you Ethan Miller.
At the bottom she wrote: Ask Lauren what she promised me in the nursery. Rebecca called it bait but arranged witnesses anyway. Lauren admitted that after Noah’s birth, while she was half-drugged and weak, Patricia had held the baby too long and demanded a promise that Lauren would never run with what belonged to the family. Lauren had said whatever got Noah back into her arms.
Ethan understood Patricia’s trick. A frightened sentence spoken under coercion became, in Patricia’s mind, a contract. She wanted Ethan to blame Lauren. Instead, he blamed Patricia for making fear into a weapon, Richard for allowing it, Lauren for running without enough truth, and himself for asking too few questions. He refused to let Patricia choose the order.
Rebecca’s legal response was structural: separate Noah’s custody from Horizon assets. Petition Ortiz for an independent trustee so no one could argue physical control of the child was necessary for financial administration. The judge could not make senators moral, but he could make Noah legally useless as a lever.
That night Noah asked Lauren to draw the nursery, not the real one but a better one. She drew a room with a window that opened, a door that did not lock, and a rocking chair big enough for two. Noah added an elephant. Ethan added a roof that lifted off if someone lied. Melissa added a sun.
