Chapter 65

Chapter 65: Evelyn’s Voice
Evelyn Hart’s video had to be converted from cassette by an evidence technician who grumbled that the machine belonged in a museum. The delay gave Ethan six hours to regret agreeing to watch it. Melissa came with him. Rebecca came because Ethan asked.
On the screen, Evelyn appeared in a small apartment with floral curtains and a swan-shaped lamp. She looked twenty-two and ancient. She said her son did not die. His name was Daniel. He was born at 3:08 in the morning, six pounds and nine ounces, with a red mark near his left shoulder and lungs angry enough to make the nurse laugh.
They let Evelyn hold him for eleven minutes. She counted because her mother had warned her never to trust hospitals that took babies too fast. She sang “Blackbird” because it was the only song she remembered completely, and he stopped crying when she sang. The next morning they told her he was gone and would not show a body.
Evelyn described the woman in pearls watching from the hall while the doctor spoke. Ethan did not need the name. Patricia’s silhouette had existed inside the lie from the beginning. Evelyn said a nurse named Clara later told her the baby lived and warned that the ward had police friends.
Then Evelyn held up a small silver spoon. Her father had bought it because every child deserved one ridiculous thing nobody could afford. If Daniel ever saw it, she wanted him to know somebody had been silly with love before anybody was cruel with money.
She looked into the camera and spoke to the son she hoped would survive somewhere beyond theft. If he heard she left him, that was a lie. If they said she was sick, that was a lie. If they said blood mattered more than love, that was also a lie. Blood was where they found him. Love was where he should have been kept.
Ethan made it to the stairwell before his legs gave way. Later, Noah offered him the blue elephant and asked if the sad thing needed holding. Ethan told him his first mother had loved him and looked for him. Noah leaned against his arm and said, “You found me.” For that night, finding counted even if it was late.

Evelyn’s voice did not ask Ethan to become Daniel all at once. It simply reached through time and placed one true thing in his hands: he had been wanted.
