Chapter 68: The Ozark House

The off-books facility near the Ozarks had once been a summer camp called Willowmere. Its cheerful sign still stood half swallowed by vines, but a black security camera watched from beneath the carved letters. The cabins were painted green to disappear into trees. The lake was still under morning mist.

Ethan recognized Patricia’s taste in the renovated main lodge: old charm preserved just enough to make cruelty look inherited. White curtains. Stone chimney. Fresh gravel. A discreet medical waste container behind the kitchen. People like Patricia never built dungeons if they could refurbish nostalgia.

Keene briefed the federal team. Ethan was there only to identify symbols and access patterns. He was not armed, not first through any door, and not allowed to improvise. Rebecca had threatened to staple those instructions to his forehead.

The raid began quietly. No sirens until agents were already at the doors. Confusion served predators; coordination served children. The reception area smelled of bleach and pine air freshener. A woman in scrubs froze behind the desk. A man in a cardigan reached for a drawer and stopped when agents ordered him down.

Behind a pantry shelf, agents found stairs. Below was a clean corridor of white doors, soft lights, and cameras—rooms designed to look clinical enough to justify control and comfortable enough to deny captivity. A teenage girl sat on one bed as if rescue were another test. An elderly woman repeated that her daughter’s baby had lived. A twelve-year-old asked whether the people upstairs were new sponsors.

In the records room, Ethan found the HART LINE: CURRENT file. Inside were photographs of Noah at school, Lauren at the grocery store, Ethan outside his office, Melissa near a therapy clinic, and Rebecca entering court. Beside Noah’s photo someone had written: attachment to E.M. significant; exploit if separation required.

Keene took the file before Ethan crushed it. By afternoon, medics and social workers moved survivors into sunlight. Adrian was denied entry at the perimeter, which Rebecca later called personal growth by court order. He sent one message: Look for cabinet H-14. Inside, they found Anca Ionescu’s file. The child had survived. Placement name: Rebecca Anne Vance.

Camp Willowmere was designed to blur captivity until it resembled care. The raid tore that disguise away, and what remained was a system that had learned to speak softly while locking doors.
