Chapter 1 - The Mark Of The Past

The heavy hospital door clicked shut, trapping a suffocating silence inside the sterile delivery room. Hannah collapsed onto the cold linoleum floor, her knees giving out completely as a guttural sob tore through her throat. She buried her face in her trembling hands, her body shaking with the violent force of a mother whose entire universe had just been shattered in a matter of seconds. The delivery nurse stood frozen near the rolling bassinet, holding the crying infant awkwardly, her wide eyes darting between my exhausted face and the empty hallway where my brother had just vanished.

I pushed myself up against the stiff white hospital pillows. My body was completely drained, screaming in agony from fourteen hours of intense physical labor, but the pure adrenaline pumping through my veins masked every single ache. I swung my legs over the side of the bed, ignoring the sharp protest of my muscles and the tangled medical wires.

"Give him to me," I ordered the nurse, my voice steady and commanding despite the chaotic whirlwind spinning inside my head.

The nurse hesitated for a fraction of a second before gently placing the crying newborn into my arms. I looked down at the tiny, fragile life I had carried for nine months. He had a tuft of dark hair and perfect little fingers that immediately grasped the edge of the cotton blanket. But my eyes were irresistibly drawn to the small, deep purple mark resting just beneath his collarbone. The eclipse. It was perfectly formed, a dark circle partially obscured by a crescent of lighter skin. It was beautiful to anyone else, but to me, it was a terrifying beacon from a past we had buried.

Hannah crawled over to the side of my bed, her face stained with tears and smeared makeup. She reached up, her fingers trembling as she gently touched the baby soft cheek. "Sarah, what is happening?" she pleaded, her voice cracking with sheer desperation. "Why did Caleb look at him like that? Why did he run away from our son? We prayed for this child for seven years. We built a nursery. We picked out a name. And he just looked at him with absolute disgust."

"It was not disgust, Hannah," I whispered softly, pulling the blanket up to cover the eclipse mark. "It was pure terror."

I closed my eyes, letting the memories flood back. I was twelve years old, and Caleb was sixteen. Our father had always been a secretive, paranoid man who kept the doors locked and refused to let us take family photographs. One night, while he was away on what he called a business trip, Caleb and I managed to pry open the heavy iron safe hidden beneath the floorboards in the basement. We expected to find money or old jewelry. Instead, we found a stack of highly classified police files, forged birth certificates, and a single, faded photograph of a baby with the exact same eclipse birthmark. Written across the back of the photograph in our father blood red ink were three words: The Hunted Heir.

Our father caught us looking. He burned the photograph in the fireplace that very night, his eyes wild with a fear I had never seen before. He made us swear on our lives to never mention the mark, the files, or the baby ever again. Two years later, he died in a mysterious car crash that the police ruled an accident, though Caleb and I always knew the truth. They had finally found him.

And now, looking at the innocent child resting against my chest, I realized the nightmare was far from over.
