Chapter 2 - The Secrets In The Iron Safe

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital. Caleb had completely disappeared. He turned off his phone, emptied his primary bank accounts, and abandoned his weeping wife. I brought Hannah and the baby, whom we decided to name Leo, back to my quiet suburban house. My two older boys were thrilled to meet their new cousin, entirely oblivious to the dark cloud of fear hanging over our family.

Hannah spent the first forty eight hours sitting in my rocking chair, holding Leo and staring blankly at the wall. She was a broken woman, completely unable to comprehend how the love of her life could walk away from their miracle child. I knew I had to find Caleb, but first, I needed absolute proof of what we were dealing with. I needed to open that iron safe one more time.

After putting the children to sleep, I drove across town to the old storage facility where I kept our father remaining belongings. The storage unit was cold, damp, and smelled of dust and decaying paper. I pulled a heavy tarp off the rusted iron safe resting in the corner. I had memorized the combination twenty years ago, and my fingers expertly spun the heavy metal dial.

The heavy door creaked open, revealing the dark interior. The photograph was gone, burned all those years ago, but the police files remained untouched. I pulled the thick manila envelope into the dim overhead light and began reading the documents that defined our entire existence.

The files detailed a massive, highly organized criminal syndicate known as the Eclipse Cartel, a ruthless organization that controlled international shipping ports and illegal gambling rings. But they were not just a business. They operated like a dark royal family, obsessed with bloodlines and genetic legacy. The leader of the syndicate possessed a rare genetic mutation, a birthmark shaped like an eclipse.

Our father was not a humble accountant, as he had always claimed. The files revealed his true identity. He was the chief enforcer for the syndicate, the man who made their enemies disappear. But when the leader of the syndicate had a child out of wedlock, a child bearing the royal eclipse mark, the cartel ordered our father to eliminate the baby to prevent a future war for control.

Instead of killing the innocent child, our father chose to run. He forged new identities for all of us and hid in the quiet suburbs of Seattle. But the files left one massive, terrifying question unanswered. How did the genetic mark of a ruthless crime lord end up on the child I just carried for my brother?

The realization hit me with the force of a freight train. The IVF clinic. Caleb and Hannah had struggled for years with fertility. If the syndicate had tracked Caleb down, if they knew he was trying to have a child, they could have easily infiltrated the clinic and swapped the genetic material. They were trying to breed their heir back into existence, using my body as the vessel.
