Chapter 8 - Poison In The Well

"You are out of your mind if you think you are taking my nephew anywhere," I snapped, placing myself directly between Evelyn and the staircase. "You abandoned us. You spent twenty five years living in luxury while Caleb worked two jobs to feed us after father died!"

Evelyn stood up slowly, smoothing the front of her tailored coat. "I searched for you for two decades, Sarah. Your father hid behind forged identities and fake death certificates. It took me years to track down the IVF clinic Caleb used, and even longer to clear out the syndicate thugs your father left behind. I did not survive a war for my legacy just to be stopped by a surrogate mother and a small town carpenter."

She picked up her umbrella, giving us a chilling, beautiful smile. "I offered you a peaceful transition. You could have lived like royalty in Switzerland. But since you choose to fight, prepare yourselves. In my world, we do not use crude weapons. We use the law, the banks, and the truth."

She walked out into the storm, the heavy front door clicking shut behind her.

The nightmare began early the following morning. By eight o'clock, Caleb business accounts were completely frozen by an international court injunction originating from Zurich. By ten o'clock, Child Protective Services arrived at my front door accompanied by two armed state troopers, bearing a court order that alleged Leo had been illegally obtained through an unregistered, fraudulent surrogacy agreement.

Hannah fell to her knees in the hallway, weeping hysterically as the social workers presented papers claiming that the genetic material used at the clinic had no legal standing under international custody laws. Evelyn was using her limitless wealth to weaponize the legal system, dismantling our lives piece by piece with terrifying speed.

"They are going to take him, Sarah!" Hannah sobbed, clutching Leo tightly to her chest in the kitchen while Caleb argued frantically on the phone with three different attorneys. "The court hearing is in forty eight hours! Her lawyers are saying we are unfit guardians because of our father criminal history!"

I stood in my kitchen, looking at the court summons resting on the counter. The legal system was moving too fast, corrupted by high priced international attorneys who knew exactly which loopholes to exploit. If we stayed in Seattle and fought this in court, Evelyn would buy every judge and drag the case out until Leo turned three, taking custody of him by default.

"Caleb," I said, my voice razor sharp as I hung up my phone. "Cancel the attorneys. We are not going to court."

Caleb stopped pacing, looking at me with wide, desperate eyes. "What are you talking about, Sarah? If we ignore a judge order, we become fugitives!"

"Evelyn wants a legal war because she owns the courtroom," I said, grabbing three duffel bags from the closet. "She thinks we are weak because we live ordinary lives. But she forgot one crucial detail. Our father taught us how to disappear, and I spent eleven months learning how to dismantle powerful people. We are packing the children, burning our digital footprints, and taking Leo where her lawyers cannot touch us."
