Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Ledger

The silence inside the living room was suffocating. Hannah quickly escorted the boys and little Leo upstairs, locking the bedroom door behind them, leaving Caleb, Sarah, and the ghost of our past standing around the cold hearth. Evelyn sat in my armchair, pulling off her leather gloves with slow, methodical precision, completely unbothered by the hostility radiating from both of her adult children.

"You died," Caleb rasped, his knuckles white as he squeezed the arm of the sofa. "Father swore to us that you died in a car accident in Geneva when I was four years old. He wept over your grave!"

"Your father was a master of theatrical lies, Caleb," Evelyn replied, her voice cold and devoid of maternal warmth. "He staged that crash because he realized who I really was. He panicked, stole my infant daughter, kidnapped my young son, and fled to America like a thief in the middle of the night."

I stepped forward, my hands clenched into tight fists. "You are saying our father kidnapped us from you?"

"I am saying your father was a low level accountant who thought he could outsmart the oldest financial dynasty in Eastern Europe," Evelyn corrected smoothly. "The Eclipse syndicate was never a simple street gang or a violent drug cartel, Sarah. That was merely the crude muscle your father hired to protect himself when he realized what he had stolen."

She reached into her leather handbag and pulled out a heavy, leather bound ledger stamped with a golden emblem of an eclipse. She placed it onto the coffee table with a soft thump.

"The eclipse mark is not a cartel brand," Evelyn explained, looking directly at Caleb. "It is a extremely rare genetic marker belonging to the House of Vane. For three centuries, our family has held controlling interests in sovereign wealth trusts, private European banks, and vast real estate holdings across three continents. The entire estate, currently valued at over four billion dollars, is held in a strict, unbreakable lineage trust."

Caleb let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "We do not care about your blood money, Evelyn. We built our own lives without you. You can take your billions and go back to Europe."

Evelyn leaned forward, her dark eyes locking onto Caleb with terrifying intensity. "You do not understand, my dear boy. The trust bylaws created by my grandfather are absolute. If a male heir bearing the genetic mark reaches his third birthday on sovereign family land, the entire four billion dollar trust unlocks permanently to his legal guardian. But if he does not, the entire estate forfeits to a board of corrupt international trustees."

She pointed a long, manicured finger toward the ceiling, directly toward the room where Leo was sleeping.

"Leo turns three in six months," Evelyn whispered, her voice laced with absolute steel. "And I am not about to let a four billion dollar empire vanish because you want to play happy suburban family in Seattle. The boy is coming with me to Geneva."
