Chapter 9 - The Storm On The Water

By midnight, we were off the grid. Vance, the trusted security specialist who had helped me escape my abusive marriage years ago, provided us with an unregistered, heavy duty SUV and a secure cabin located on a secluded island in Puget Sound. The property was accessible only by water, completely hidden by thick evergreen forests and surrounded by treacherous rocky cliffs.
For three weeks, we lived in total secrecy. Caleb and I kept watch in shifts while Hannah cared for the children inside the cozy log cabin. But Evelyn had resources that rivaled sovereign nations.
On a moonless night, as a thick sea fog rolled over the island, the emergency perimeter sensors Vance had installed around the property began to chime softly. I pulled up the night vision security feed on a private satellite monitor.
Anchored just half a mile offshore was a massive, two hundred foot luxury megayacht flying a Panamanian flag. Two sleek, silent rubber zodiac boats were speeding across the black water, heading directly toward our private dock. Evelyn had bypassed the local authorities entirely. She was coming to collect her heir by force.
"Hannah, take the children down to the storm shelter beneath the floorboards!" Caleb commanded, racking the slide of a heavy tactical shotgun Vance had provided. "Sarah, get the emergency flares!"
The cabin door was breached with a sharp explosion that shattered the wooden frame. Four private security operatives dressed in dark tactical gear flooded the living room, deploy stun grenades that filled the space with blinding light and deafening noise. Caleb fought like a wild lion, using his incredible strength to throw the first two operatives through the glass coffee table, but the sheer number of men overwhelmed him, pinning him to the floor.
I fired a blinding marine emergency flare directly across the room, filling the cabin with thick red smoke and intense heat. The operatives scattered, coughing and disoriented. I grabbed a heavy iron poker and struck the man holding Caleb, freeing my brother.
We burst out the back door into the freezing rain, running toward the cliffside docks. But as we reached the wooden pier, we found Evelyn standing under the canopy of a high speed private launch boat. Two of her guards were holding a terrified, crying Leo, whom they had snatched from the storm shelter during the chaotic smoke screen.

"It is over, my children," Evelyn called out over the roar of the crashing waves, her voice amplified by a speaker. "He belongs to the House of Vane now. In twelve hours, we will be in international waters, and by his third birthday, the dynasty will be secured!"
Caleb looked at his crying son, then at the roaring ocean below the cliff. His face transformed from panic to absolute, terrifying resolve. He turned to me and whispered, "Hold on tight, Sarah."
