Chapter 2 - Decrypting The Vault

By three in the morning, the hospital room was quiet except for the steady beep of the heart monitor. I had received seven stitches along my hairline and a mild concussion diagnosis, but I refused the sedative the doctor offered. My mind was burning with a cold, absolute clarity. I sat up in the hospital bed, wearing a dark gray sweatshirt, with a secure military grade laptop resting across my lap. Detective Miller stood near the door, accompanied by two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation who had been dispatched the moment Camille mentioned international money laundering.
My lead cybersecurity engineer, Marcus, walked into the room carrying a high capacity encrypted hard drive. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened around his collar, but his eyes were bright with shock.
"Elena, we accessed the forty fifth floor server room under the federal search warrant," Marcus said, setting his laptop on the rolling tray table beside my bed. "Camille was telling the absolute truth. Julian and his father didn't just build a hidden partition on our network. They built an entire ghost architecture beneath our corporate infrastructure."
"Show me," I said, my voice deadpan as I typed in my master administrator credentials.
The screen flickered, revealing thousands of encrypted directories hiding behind my company's main firewall. Julian had hired a rogue third party firm to bypass my security protocols, using my firm's high speed data channels to hide the Sterling family's illegal financial transactions. Because my company was on the verge of a massive public offering, they had planned to use my clean corporate reputation as the ultimate shield for their crimes.
Marcus pulled up server node seven, the specific drive Camille had mentioned. "It took us two hours to crack the encryption, but what we found inside is apocalyptic."
The first folder contained full financial ledgers detailing a seventy million dollar tax evasion scheme orchestrated by Arthur Sterling over the past decade. He had been skimming money from his private charitable foundations to pay off massive gambling debts in Macau and fund Victoria's absurd lifestyle. The second folder contained forged corporate resolutions bearing my digitized signature, documents that would have transferred control of my intellectual property to Victoria's offshore trust the moment I was declared incapacitated or dead.
"They weren't just trying to force you to sign at dinner tonight," the lead FBI agent, Agent Vance, said softly, stepping closer to the bed. "They were preparing to oust you entirely or frame you for the fraud if the authorities ever caught on. If you had signed those papers tonight, they would have thrown you to the wolves within a month."
I stared at the digitized signature on the screen, feeling a cold wave of disgust wash over me. For seven years, I had believed Julian loved me. I had believed his parents were merely snobbish, difficult aristocrats who needed time to accept a self made woman into their circle. I had spent millions of my own hard earned money renovating their estates, funding their charities, and saving their reputation, completely unaware that they viewed me as nothing more than a wealthy farm animal waiting to be slaughtered.
"There is one more file, Elena," Marcus whispered, clicking on a video folder labeled with a date from four years ago.
I looked at the screen. The footage was taken from a hidden security camera inside the penthouse study. It showed a younger, terrified Camille cowering against a bookcase while Julian screamed at her, striking her across the face when she threatened to tell her husband about his financial theft. Seconds later, Arthur walked into the frame, not to stop his son, but to help him wipe down the room and confiscate Camille's phone.
My hands clenched into tight fists against the hospital blanket. My thumb hovered over the transmit button on my terminal.
"Agent Vance," I said, looking up at the federal officer. "I am releasing my full private administrative keys to your forensic team. I want every single file on these servers unredacted. I want every shell company exposed. And I want everyone who touched this data in handcuffs by dawn."

Agent Vance nodded slowly. "Mrs. Sterling, this will destroy your husband's entire lineage."
I looked at my reflection in the dark glass of the hospital window, staring at the white bandage wrapped around my head. "Good. It is time for them to learn what happens when you try to burn down a woman who knows how to build empires."
