Chapter 3 - The Empire Strikes Back

By eight o'clock the following morning, the news of Julian's arrest had exploded across every major financial network in the country. Headlines flashed across the bottom of the television screens: Tech CEO Assaulted In Penthouse Boardroom; Sterling Family Named In Federal Fraud Investigation. The stock price of my company fluctuated wildly during pre market trading, but I immediately released a personal video statement from my office, showing the stitches on my head, speaking clearly and calmly to our investors. I assured the market that the core technology remained completely uncompromised, that the rogue servers had been isolated, and that I was personally overseeing the purge of every corrupt entity connected to the board.
The response was immediate and overwhelming. Public sympathy rallied behind me, while the Sterling name became toxic overnight. Major banks began freezing the family's assets, revoking their credit lines, and calling in loans that had been outstanding for years.
I was sitting in my corner office reviewing the quarterly audit when the glass doors swung open. Victoria Sterling marched into the room, flanked by two high powered defense attorneys in tailored suits. She was no longer wearing her flawless diamonds or her aristocratic composure. Her hair was unstyled, her designer suit was rumpled, and her eyes were bloodshot with pure, unadulterated fury. My private security team stepped forward immediately, but I raised a hand, stopping them.
"Leave us," I told my guards. "Let her speak."
Victoria slammed her leather handbag onto my glass desk, leaning over the surface like a frantic vulture. "You vicious, ungrateful peasant!" she hissed, her voice trembling with rage. "You have ruined my son! He is sitting in a cold holding cell because of your theatrical stunt! Do you have any idea what you have done to our family name?"
I slowly leaned back in my executive chair, folding my hands over my lap. "Julian threw a heavy glass at my head, Victoria. He fractured my skull. He is sitting in a holding cell because he committed felony assault, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
"It was a domestic disagreement!" Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "We offered you a place in high society! We gave you access to the most powerful networks in the world! You would be nothing without the Sterling name!"
I picked up a manila folder resting on my desk and tossed it across the glass. It slid directly into her hands. "That folder contains the asset seizure notices issued by the federal court thirty minutes ago. The government has frozen your penthouse, your yacht, your estate in the Hamptons, and every single offshore account tied to your foundation. You don't have a family name anymore, Victoria. You have a criminal case number."
One of her attorneys quickly skimmed the papers inside the folder, his face turning pale. He leaned over and whispered frantically into Victoria's ear, but she shoved him away, staring at me with pure hatred.
"We will fight this," she spat out. "We have the best legal team in the country. Arthur will call the governor. You will not get a single penny from the divorce!"
"I don't want your money, Victoria. You don't have any," I said, my voice completely deadpan. "I am buying your debt. My legal team just acquired the mortgage notes on your primary residence from the bank. You have forty eight hours to pack your clothes and vacate the penthouse."
Victoria stumbled backward, her hand flying to her throat as if she couldn't breathe. "You can't do that!"

"I just did," I replied, standing up and looking down at her. "And if you ever step foot on my corporate property again, I will have you arrested for criminal trespassing. Get out of my office."
She stood there for a long, agonizing moment, her body shaking, realizing for the very first time in her life that her money, her connections, and her social status were entirely gone. She turned around and practically ran toward the elevators, her high heels clicking frantically against the marble floor. I sat back down, opened my laptop, and prepared for the final battle in the courtroom.
