Chapter 1 - THE MOMENT HE LOOKED UP

Daniel’s second call kept vibrating against my palm.

Below me, his family moved closer to the boarding line while Claire rested her head against his shoulder.

I pressed Answer.

“Rachel?”

Daniel’s voice sounded cautious now.

The exhaustion had vanished.

“Are you still at the hospital?” I asked.

He glanced toward Claire before answering.

“Yes.”

The lie came so easily that I almost admired it.

“Which floor?”

“What?”

“Which floor are you on, Daniel?”

He stopped walking.

Richard looked at him.

Lauren’s smile disappeared.

Claire pulled her hand away from his chest.

“I’m in surgery,” Daniel said.

“You shouldn’t even be calling me.”

I stepped closer to the balcony railing.

“Then look up.”

Daniel slowly raised his head.

Our eyes met across the terminal.

His face emptied.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Pure fear.

Claire followed his stare.

Lauren covered her mouth.

Richard muttered something I couldn’t hear.

Sophie and Noah turned around together.

For several seconds, no one moved.

I lifted one hand and gave Daniel a small wave.

He lowered the phone.

Then he started pushing through the crowd toward the escalator.

“Rachel, wait.”

I ended the call.

I photographed the boarding passes in their hands.

I photographed the matching luggage.

I photographed Claire.

Most importantly, I photographed Daniel’s arm around her waist.

By the time he reached the second floor, I was standing near the security checkpoint.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded.

It was the first question he asked.

Not how long I had been watching.

Not whether I was all right.

Not whether he could explain.

He wanted to know why I had ruined his secret.

“I could ask you the same thing,” I said.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

Claire and his family were approaching.

“This isn’t what you think.”

“You told me you were saving someone’s life.”

“I can explain.”

“You kissed her.”

His jaw tightened.

“Keep your voice down.”

That sentence did something unexpected to me.

It removed the final piece of shame I had been carrying for him.

Claire stopped beside us.

She was younger than I had expected.

Maybe thirty-two.

She wore a cream coat and the diamond bracelet Daniel claimed had been donated to the hospital auction.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

“Tell her.”

I looked at Claire.

“Tell me what?”

Daniel reached for my arm.

I stepped back.

He lowered his hand.

“We were going to talk after the trip,” he said.

“What trip?”

“Cancun.”

Lauren answered for him.

Richard shot her a warning look.

I stared at them.

“Daniel told us you knew,” Sophie said.

Her voice trembled.

“He said you two were separated.”

Noah looked from his father to me.

“Aren’t you?”

“No,” I said.

The word landed harder than a scream.

Sophie’s face turned white.

Daniel stepped between us.

“This is not the place.”

“You made it the place.”

The final boarding announcement sounded for their flight.

No one moved toward the gate.

I looked at the family I had cooked for, cared for, defended, and loved for twelve years.

Then I looked at my husband.

“Go on your vacation,” I said.

Daniel frowned.

“You’re not going to make a scene?”

“No.”

Relief flickered across his face.

It lasted less than a second.

“I’m going home,” I continued.

“I’m going to open every account you told me not to worry about.”

“I’m going to read every document you asked me to sign.”

“And before your plane lands, I’m going to know exactly what else you’ve been hiding.”

Daniel’s relief disappeared.

Richard’s expression changed too.

He was no longer looking at me like a humiliated wife.

He was looking at me like a threat.

May you like

Then he turned to Daniel and said the words that confirmed my marriage was only the beginning.

“Don’t let her get to the house first.”
