Chapter 13 - CLAIRE’S CHOICE

Claire agreed to meet with federal investigators.
She brought emails, receipts, hotel records, and recordings.
Daniel had used her foundation access to approve payments from Vantage.
Claire claimed she believed the payments were legitimate donations.
The investigators did not accept that explanation.
Neither did I.
She had ignored obvious warning signs because the lies gave her something she wanted.
A wealthy surgeon.
A lake house.
A new family.
A future built inside the ruins of my life.
Still, her evidence mattered.
One email showed Richard instructing Daniel to revise Thomas Avery’s surgical report.
Another showed Daniel asking Claire to move foundation money into Northstar.
The most damaging message came after the patient’s death.
Daniel wrote, Once the transfer is done, Rachel cannot touch us.
Claire replied, Then finish it before Cancun.
She had known more than she admitted.
When I confronted her outside the investigators’ office, she did not deny it.
“I thought it was business money,” she said.
“You knew it wasn’t yours.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I had not agreed to a divorce.”
“Not at first.”
“But eventually.”
“Yes.”
“And you stayed.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I loved him.”
“So did I.”
That was the tragedy Daniel had created.
He had taken love from two women and turned it into a competition neither of us had agreed to enter.
Claire handed me an envelope.
Inside was the key to the lake house.
“There’s a safe beneath the bedroom floor.”
“What is inside?”
“Daniel’s personal records.”
“Why didn’t you give the key to investigators?”
“Because there is something in the safe about you.”
Maya and I traveled to Wisconsin that afternoon with federal agents.
The lake house looked like a smaller version of my home.
Daniel had chosen the same furniture.
The same dishes.
The same bedroom colors.
He had not created a new life with Claire.
He had copied ours and removed me from it.
Agents opened the floor safe.
Inside were stacks of cash, passports, and a sealed letter.
My name was written across the front.
The handwriting belonged to my mother.
I opened it with shaking hands.
Rachel,
If you are reading this, Richard knows I discovered the payments.
Do not let Daniel convince you that loyalty requires silence.
A good man does not ask you to become smaller so he can remain powerful.
The final page contained a list of account numbers and the name of a trust attorney.
It also contained one sentence underlined twice.
You own fifty-one percent, and no document can change that without your verified consent.

Daniel had spent years acting like I was a guest in the empire I had built.
He had forgotten the empire was legally mine.
