Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR

Daniel’s accusation reached the hospital board before noon.
He claimed I had entered his office, removed confidential patient information, and threatened to destroy his career because of a private marital dispute.
He made no mention of Claire.
He made no mention of the forged documents.
He described me as unstable.
Obsessive.
Vindictive.
Exactly as Richard had planned.
Maya responded with photographs showing the flash drives inside a safe containing fraudulent insurance policies and property documents.
Then she sent notice that the files would remain sealed until reviewed under legal supervision.
Daniel’s attack stalled.
It did not disappear.
That evening, Claire came to the house alone.
I watched her through the security camera before opening the door.
“I need to talk to you.”
“You had twelve years of opportunities.”
“I only knew him for two.”
“That was enough time to know he was married.”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised me.
I allowed her into the foyer but no farther.
Claire removed the diamond bracelet from her wrist.
She placed it on the table.
“He told me he bought it.”
“The foundation paid for it.”
Her face tightened.
“I found the receipt.”
“Then you know.”
“I know some of it.”
She told me Daniel had promised to leave me after transferring the practice.
He claimed I had taken control of the company during a period when he was grieving his first wife.
He said I had manipulated him into marriage.
“He told you I stole his life?”
“He told me you owned everything because your mother forced him to sign unfair documents.”
“My mother invested four million dollars.”
Claire looked stunned.
“He said it was a gift.”
“It was an investment.”
She sat down.
For the first time, she looked less like my husband’s mistress and more like another person discovering the size of his lies.
“I didn’t know about the patient until last night,” she said.
“What did Daniel tell you?”
“That Richard covered up a manufacturing defect.”
“And Daniel?”
“He signed the amended report.”
“Why?”
“Vantage threatened to reveal that Daniel had received consulting payments before the surgery.”
I felt sick.
Claire opened her purse and removed a small digital recorder.
“Richard gave this to me.”
“Why?”
“He wanted me to record Daniel admitting that he altered the report.”
“Richard planned to use him as the scapegoat.”
“Yes.”
“Why are you giving it to me?”
“Because I heard something else.”
She pressed Play.
Richard’s voice filled the foyer.
Once Daniel signs everything, Claire gets him out of the country.
Lauren moves the accounts.
Rachel takes the blame for accessing the records.
Then we let the board believe the husband and wife destroyed each other.
The recording ended.
Claire’s hands were trembling.
“He was using all of us.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
“He was using you.”
“Daniel and Richard were using me.”
“You still chose to help them erase me.”
She accepted the words without defending herself.
Then headlights appeared outside.
Daniel’s car entered the driveway.
Claire stood.
“He can’t know I came here.”
“Why?”
May you like
She looked toward the door.
“Because he told me this morning that if you refused the settlement, he had another way to make you disappear.”
