Chapter 16 - THE LAST LIE

The leaked records portrayed my mother as unstable during her final months.
Anonymous sources claimed she had suffered paranoia.
They said her accusations against Richard and Daniel were fantasies caused by illness.
The story spread quickly.
Commentators questioned whether I had inherited the same instability.
Daniel had found a new way to use a dead woman against me.
Maya advised silence.
I refused.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because silence had protected Daniel for too long.
We held a press conference outside Bennett Surgical Partners.
I released my mother’s dated financial reports.
I released the trust documents.
I released independent medical evaluations showing she had been mentally competent when she signed her directive.
Evan released the payment timeline connecting Vantage, Northstar, and the lake house.
Claire allowed investigators to confirm that Daniel had instructed her to move the money.
Lauren provided evidence that Richard had ordered the leak.
Then a reporter asked the question everyone wanted answered.
“Mrs. Bennett, are you trying to destroy your husband?”
I looked directly into the cameras.
“No.”
“I am refusing to help him destroy anyone else.”
The statement spread farther than the leaked records.
Former employees began contacting investigators.
A nurse reported that Daniel had pressured her to change a chart.
An accountant revealed payments to shell companies.
A former patient produced an email showing Daniel had recommended an expensive device after receiving consulting fees.
The truth had not been hidden by one lie.
It had been buried beneath hundreds of small silences.
Once people stopped remaining silent, Daniel’s reputation collapsed within days.
He called me after midnight.
I answered only because Maya had arranged for the conversation to be recorded.
“You got what you wanted,” he said.
“I wanted a faithful husband.”
“You know what I mean.”
“No.”
“I don’t think I ever did.”
He sounded drunk.
“My father is going to prison.”
“That decision belongs to prosecutors.”
“Lauren betrayed us.”
“Lauren told the truth after years of lying.”
“Claire gave them everything.”
“You gave Claire everything.”
He went silent.
Then his voice softened.
“Do you remember our first apartment?”
“Yes.”
“We had nothing.”
“We had each other.”
“We were happy.”
“I was.”
The distinction hurt him.
“I still love you,” he whispered.
I remembered Gate 42.
The matching suitcases.
The kiss.
The effortless voice telling me he was saving a patient.
“You called me from an airport and told me you loved me while holding another woman.”
“I was afraid.”
“You were caught.”
“That is not the same thing.”
The call ended.
Ten minutes later, police found Daniel outside the hospital.
He had entered a restricted records room using an old access card.

In his hands was the original Thomas Avery surgical report.
