Chapter 15 - THE HEARING

The emergency divorce hearing drew reporters from across the state.
Daniel’s attorneys argued that the practice was primarily the result of his medical skill.
They described my ownership as a technical arrangement created by my mother.
They claimed I was using marital pain to seize a business Daniel had built.
Maya placed the original trust agreement before the judge.
It showed that my mother’s investment had financed the first clinic, equipment, insurance, and salaries.
It showed that I had personally guaranteed the initial loans.
It showed that Daniel had signed every page.
His attorneys then attacked my credibility.
They presented edited emails suggesting I had threatened Daniel.
They questioned my relationship with Evan Reed.
They implied we were having an affair.
Daniel watched silently while his lawyers repeated the same kind of lie he had used at the airport.
Then Maya played the complete recording.
My alleged romantic meeting with Evan was actually a compliance review attended by six people.
The edited sentences had been taken from discussions about terminating a fraudulent vendor contract.
Daniel’s attorneys had received the altered files from Richard.
The judge was not amused.
Then Sophie entered the courtroom.
Daniel stood.
“What is she doing here?”
Sophie walked past him.
She was not required to testify.
She had insisted.
She described the fake messages.
The family chat.
The planned proposal.
The lies Daniel had told about me abandoning her and Noah.
Daniel’s attorney objected.
The judge allowed her to continue.
“My dad made me hate the person who raised me,” Sophie said.
“He did it so I would accept the woman he wanted to replace her with.”
Daniel covered his face.
I wanted to protect Sophie from the pain of that moment.
But for once, protecting someone did not mean protecting Daniel.
It meant allowing the truth to exist.
The judge granted me exclusive use of the house.
Major business assets remained frozen.
Daniel was prohibited from transferring or destroying property.
The forged divorce petition was referred to prosecutors.
Outside the courtroom, Daniel caught Sophie by the arm.
“How could you do this to me?”
She pulled away.
“You did it to yourself.”
Noah stood beside her.
He had refused to enter the courtroom, but he had heard enough.
Daniel looked at both children.
“You’re choosing her?”
Noah’s eyes filled with tears.
“She never made us choose.”
That sentence broke something inside Daniel.
He turned toward me with hatred.
“You took my children.”
“No.”
I kept my voice calm.
“You lost their trust.”
Reporters surrounded him.
Questions flew from every direction.
Daniel pushed through the crowd and disappeared into a waiting car.
That night, someone released my mother’s private medical records to the press.

Only one person outside the investigation still had access to them.
Daniel had begun his final attack.
