Chapter 14 - The Gala Ambush

Friday evening arrived with the stifling, electric tension of a gathering storm.

The annual Chicago Tech Innovation Gala was held at the Field Museum. It was a sprawling, opulent event under the soaring ceilings and dinosaur exhibits. Everyone who was anyone in the Midwest corporate sector was there.

Including Silas Vance.

He believed he had won. At 3:55 PM, just before the market closed, his shell companies had aggressively purchased the discounted Lawson Ridge shares. He now believed he held the leverage to force my resignation.

I arrived at the gala wearing a stunning, structured white blazer over a tailored black gown. I looked like a matriarch stepping onto a battlefield. Julian walked beside me, his hand resting securely at the small of my back.

We navigated the crowded floor, ignoring the whispers and the stares from the elite crowd who had been reading the tabloid rumors all week.

Silas was standing near the champagne fountain, surrounded by a group of sycophantic investors. He spotted us approaching and smiled—a wide, arrogant, victorious grin.

"Vivian. Julian," Silas projected his voice, ensuring the surrounding crowd could hear. "I must admit, I am surprised to see you here. I assumed you would be busy packing your offices. The market was rather brutal to Lawson Ridge today, wasn't it?"

"The market fluctuates, Silas," I said smoothly, stopping three feet away from him. "But the truth always balances out in the end."

"The truth is that you are no longer the controlling voice of your own company, my dear," Silas sneered, swirling his champagne. "My holding firms acquired thirty percent of Lawson Ridge this afternoon. I am calling an emergency board meeting on Monday. Your tenure as CEO is over."

"Is that so?" Julian asked, his voice a low, lethal rumble. He didn't look angry. He looked profoundly entertained.

"You played a very sloppy game, Silas," I said, pulling a sleek, encrypted tablet from my clutch purse.

I tapped the screen and held it up. It displayed a live, digitized map of international banking nodes.

"When you purchased those shares today," I explained, my voice cutting through the ambient noise of the gala, "you used a routing hub in Cyprus. A hub that the IRS and the Department of Homeland Security have been monitoring for international tax evasion for three years."

Silas’s smile vanished. The color began to drain from his face.

"You thought you were buying my company," I said, taking a step closer, my eyes locking onto his with absolute, terrifying authority. "But what you actually did was voluntarily wire three hundred million dollars of undeclared, untaxed offshore capital directly into an SEC-monitored corporate account."

"You set me up," Silas hissed, genuine panic finally fracturing his composure. He looked around the room wildly. "This is entrapment! I will have my lawyers bury you!"

"You won't have time to call them," Julian stated calmly.

Right on cue, the heavy brass doors of the museum swung open. The music abruptly cut out.

A team of six federal FBI agents in dark suits marched directly onto the gala floor. The wealthy crowd parted instantly, murmuring in shock and confusion.

The lead agent walked straight up to Silas Vance.

"Silas Vance," the agent barked, pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for massive federal tax evasion, wire fraud, and illegal market manipulation. You have the right to remain silent."

Silas stumbled backward, hitting the champagne table. Glass shattered against the marble floor. "This is a mistake! I am a billionaire!"

"Not anymore," I said softly, watching the agents wrench his arms behind his back. "The IRS officially froze all of your global assets ten minutes ago. You are bankrupt, Silas. And you did it to yourself."

As they dragged the screaming, humiliated tech mogul out of the museum, the flashbulbs of the press cameras illuminated his absolute destruction.

I didn't gloat. I didn't cheer. I simply turned and looked at Julian.

He was watching me with an expression of pure, unadulterated worship. The dark shadow from his past had been permanently exorcised, not by hiding it, but by dragging it into the blinding light.

"You," Julian whispered, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me flush against his chest, "are the most magnificent, terrifying woman I have ever known."

May you like

"I told you," I smiled, leaning up to kiss him amidst the stunned silence of the gala. "I am whatever I need to be to protect my house."
