Chapter 22 - The Architect of Shadows

When a ghost returns from the grave, they never come through the front door. They slip through the cracks in the foundation you thought were sealed.

By 2:00 AM, the gala was a distant memory. Our coastal estate had been transformed back into a militarized war room. My lead cybersecurity team, along with Julian’s most trusted crisis managers, occupied the dining room. Leo was fast asleep upstairs, guarded by two former Navy SEALs.

Julian paced the length of the room, a glass of bourbon in his hand, looking like a caged panther.

"Ten years ago, Sebastian and I cornered the European tech market," Julian explained, his voice tight and ragged. "He was brilliant. But he was completely unhinged. He started using our corporate infrastructure to launder money for a human trafficking syndicate in Eastern Europe. When I found out, I confronted him. I threatened to blow the whistle to Interpol."

"And then his plane went down," I finished, staring at the digital monitors displaying the old flight manifests.

"I thought it was a mechanical failure," Julian dragged a hand through his dark hair. "I thought the universe had solved the problem for me. I took the clean assets, dissolved his holding companies, and built Sterling Capital. I built this empire on the ashes of his disappearance."

"It wasn't a mechanical failure, Julian," my lead tech analyst, Marcus, interrupted from his laptop. "I just ran the serial numbers on the courier envelope through the dark web nodes. Sebastian faked his own death. He used the plane crash to evade Interpol, leaving you to clean up the mess while he operated from the shadows."

"Why come back now?" I asked, crossing my arms. "Why wait a decade?"

"Because of Lawson Ridge," Julian realized, stopping his pacing. "Your company’s reporting software is currently auditing the supply chains of three massive European conglomerates. We are unearthing their illegal labor practices. We are shutting down the syndicates that Sebastian relies on for his shadow income."

"We are hurting his bottom line," I smiled, a cold, predatory realization washing over me. "He didn't come back to reclaim his throne. He came back because I am burning his kingdom to the ground."

Suddenly, the massive smart-screen monitor on the wall flickered. The digital layout of the European market vanished, replaced by a live video feed.

The room went dead silent.

Sitting in a leather high-back chair, smoking a cigar in a dimly lit, opulent office, was a man in his late sixties. He had sharp, aristocratic features and eyes that were completely devoid of human empathy.

Sebastian Thorne.

"Julian," Sebastian’s voice crackled through the speakers, smooth and dripping with patronizing warmth. "You look well. Marriage suits you. Though I must say, your new security firewalls are delightfully easy to bypass."

"You son of a bitch," Julian snarled, lunging toward the screen.

"Temper, temper," Sebastian chuckled, taking a drag of his cigar. "I am calling to offer you a courtesy, my boy. You built a lovely little life with my seed money. But your wife’s software is becoming a severe liability to my international partners."

"Lawson Ridge is untouchable, Sebastian," I spoke up, stepping into the camera’s view, placing myself directly beside my husband. "If you try to hack our servers, the federal government will track your IP address before you finish typing."

Sebastian’s cold eyes shifted to me. He smiled, a terrifying, reptilian stretching of his lips.

"Ah, the famous Vivian. The matriarch of the Midwest," Sebastian purred. "I have no intention of hacking your servers, my dear. I am a businessman. I prefer leverage."

He held up a thick, leather-bound folder to the camera.

"Ten years ago, when Julian and I were partners, we signed a mutual liability clause," Sebastian explained smoothly. "It states that any assets acquired by Sterling Capital belong to the founding trust. That includes the fifty million dollars Julian used to save your precious company, Vivian. Legally, I own forty-nine percent of Lawson Ridge. I am your silent partner."

The air was sucked violently out of the room.

"You have seventy-two hours," Sebastian stated. "Shut down the European audits and transfer your controlling shares to my proxy. If you do not, I will exercise my shareholder rights, freeze your company, and hand the DOJ the forged documents proving Julian orchestrated my assassination attempt ten years ago."

The screen went black.

Julian stood frozen, the magnitude of the trap paralyzing him. Sebastian had legally cornered us, using a decade-old contract as a guillotine.

"He has the original charter," Julian whispered in horror. "If he goes to the SEC, he can seize half your company. He can ruin everything you built."

I stared at the black screen. I didn't cry. I didn't panic. I felt the familiar, brilliant fire of corporate warfare igniting in my veins.

"He thinks he is dealing with the boy he mentored," I said, my voice dropping to a freezing, absolute pitch. I turned to Julian, my eyes blazing. "He forgot that you married an apex predator."

"What are we going to do?" Julian asked.

May you like

"We are going to let him step into the light," I smiled dangerously. "And then, we are going to cut off his head."
