Chapter 8 - The Gala of Glass

Old money loves to celebrate itself.
Two weeks later, Victoria Morgan hosted the annual Crystal Winter Gala. It was an event designed to project absolute invulnerability. Senators, judges, and the city’s elite gathered in a ballroom dripping with crystal chandeliers and white orchids. Victoria was the queen holding court, basking in the illusion that she had already won.
She believed I was currently hiding in my office, frantically trying to stave off bankruptcy.
She was wrong.
Julian and I did not have an invitation. We didn't need one.
I wore a floor-length, backless gown of midnight-blue velvet. I looked immaculate, unbothered, and utterly lethal. Julian wore a classic black tuxedo, walking beside me with the terrifying grace of a panther.
We bypassed the press line and walked directly into the grand ballroom.
The heavy, rhythmic click of my heels against the marble floor caused heads to turn. Whispers erupted across the room like a sudden gust of wind.
Victoria saw us. Her smile froze, the champagne glass in her hand trembling slightly. She immediately marched toward us, flanked by two private security guards.
"You have a lot of nerve showing your face here," Victoria hissed, keeping her voice low to avoid a public scene. "Security, remove them. They are trespassing."
"We aren't trespassing, Victoria," Julian said smoothly, handing a folded document to one of the guards. "I am a platinum sponsor of this venue. I can bring whomever I choose."
Victoria glared at Julian, then turned her venomous eyes to me. "You are delaying the inevitable. The thirty days are almost up. Enjoy playing dress-up, because next week, you will have nothing."
"I wouldn't be so sure about that," I said, taking a sip from a passing waiter's tray. "I just finalized a fifty-million-dollar cash injection from Sterling Capital. The debt is paid, Victoria. The wire transfer cleared an hour ago."
Victoria’s face drained of color. She looked at Julian in absolute shock. "You... you funded her? You are throwing your money away on a sinking ship!"
"I am investing in the woman who is about to sink your entire fleet," Julian corrected, his voice dripping with pure menace.
"But we aren't here to talk about my company," I continued, stepping closer to Victoria until we were inches apart. "We are here to talk about yours."
I pulled a sleek, black flash drive from my clutch purse and held it up.
"Do you remember the waterfront development project?" I asked softly. "The one where your husband bribed three city councilmen to lock Julian out of the bid? Bradley was sloppy enough to keep the unencrypted emails on his private server."
Victoria stumbled backward, hitting a cocktail table. "You wouldn't."
"I already did," I smiled coldly. "I handed the server logs to the FBI anti-corruption unit this afternoon. They are currently securing federal warrants for your husband and your remaining board members."
Victoria gasped, clutching her chest. The mask of the untouchable matriarch shattered completely. "You are destroying my family!"
"No, Victoria," I said, my voice devoid of any pity. "Your family destroyed itself the night your son threw me into a freezing pool and thought I wouldn't learn how to swim. I didn't destroy you. I just became the current."

I turned my back on her before she could utter another word. Julian offered me his arm, his eyes shining with absolute reverence.
We walked out of the ballroom together, leaving the ghost of the Morgan family to choke on its own ashes.
