Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Within

The victory at the gala tasted sweet, but the high was short-lived.
By the end of the week, the FBI had raided the Morgan family’s corporate offices. Victoria’s husband was indicted, and the remnants of their real estate empire were frozen by the federal government. The threat of the hostile takeover was permanently eradicated.
Julian and I had won.
But as I sat in my office late on a Friday night, reviewing the final restructuring documents, I noticed something wrong.
A discrepancy in the internal server logs.
Before the FBI raid, someone inside Lawson Ridge had attempted to mass-delete the files Bradley had left behind. They had tried to destroy the evidence against the Morgans from inside my own company.
I initiated a deep forensic trace on the IP address. It took two hours to bypass the encrypted VPN, but when the final identity resolved on my screen, my heart stopped.
It was Harold.
My lead counsel. The man who had held my hand through the divorce. The man who had helped me build the workplace safety programs.
He was the mole.
I didn't scream. I didn't cry. The betrayals of the past had burned away my capacity for naive shock. I picked up my phone and called Julian.
"Julian," I said, my voice dead and flat. "We have a traitor. It’s Harold."
Julian was at my office in fifteen minutes. He locked the heavy glass doors behind him and looked at the server logs on my screen.
"He’s been playing both sides," Julian realized, his jaw clenching. "He helped you survive the divorce, but he was still on Victoria’s payroll. He was waiting for the right moment to sabotage the company from within."
"He thought he could delete the evidence and protect Victoria," I said, staring at the name on the screen. "He sold me out."
"What do you want to do?" Julian asked softly, stepping behind my chair and resting his hands on my shoulders. His touch was grounding, a physical reminder that I was not fighting alone anymore.
"I want to make an example of him," I whispered.
The next morning, I called an emergency executive board meeting. Harold walked in, looking exactly like the supportive, loyal mentor he had pretended to be for two years.
He took his seat to my right.
"Thank you all for coming," I started, standing at the head of the table. "As you know, the Morgan family’s corporate structure has collapsed. Lawson Ridge is fully secure. However, we have one final piece of business to attend to regarding corporate espionage."
Harold nodded gravely. "We need to ensure no one from Victoria’s camp attempts a retaliatory cyber-attack."
"I agree, Harold," I said, turning to look directly at him. "Which is why I had an independent cybersecurity firm audit our internal servers last night."
I clicked a button on a remote, and the massive screen behind me illuminated. It displayed the exact time-stamped logs of Harold’s IP address attempting to delete the federal evidence.
The boardroom erupted into chaotic gasps.
Harold turned the color of ash. He stared at the screen, then looked at me, genuine terror flooding his eyes. "This... this is a mistake. My computer was hacked!"
"Your computer wasn't hacked, Harold," Julian said, stepping into the boardroom from the adjoining office, flanked by two private security contractors. "We also pulled your offshore banking records. Victoria Morgan wired you two million dollars three days ago."
Harold slumped in his chair, completely defeated. The illusion of his loyalty was shattered.
"You trusted me," Harold whispered, looking at me with pathetic, desperate eyes. "I helped you get away from Bradley!"
"You helped me get away so you could manage the company while I was weak," I corrected him, my voice turning to absolute ice. "You thought I was just a frightened wife. You forgot that I am the CEO of this company. You are fired, Harold. And Julian’s law firm has already forwarded your banking records to the District Attorney. Enjoy federal prison."

As the security contractors physically escorted Harold out of the room, I looked around the table at my remaining executives.
"Lawson Ridge is a sanctuary for truth," I declared. "If anyone else is hiding in the dark, I suggest you leave now. Because I am the one holding the flashlight."
