Chapter 7 - The Trojan Horse

A cornered animal is the most dangerous kind, but a cornered woman who has already survived hell is a weapon of mass destruction.

By midnight, Harold and I had torn through the documents Victoria left behind. It was a masterpiece of corporate warfare. The debt my father had secretly taken on was buried under layers of shell companies. Victoria had spent a year tracking it down, buying the debt for pennies on the dollar, and weaponizing it.

"She has us," Harold said, rubbing his exhausted eyes. "If we don't pay the fifty million by the end of the month, she triggers a hostile takeover. We don't have that kind of liquid capital right now. Not with the recent expansions."

"We are not giving her this company, Harold," I stated, staring at the Chicago skyline out the window. "I survived Bradley. I am not going to let his mother finish the job."

"Then we need an investor," Harold said softly. "Someone with deep pockets and a willingness to go to war with the Morgan family."

There was only one person in the city who fit that description.

Julian Sterling.

Julian was a billionaire venture capitalist known for his ruthless tactics and his absolute disdain for the old-money establishment. He was a self-made titan, a man who operated in the grey areas of corporate law, and the only man who had ever publicly humiliated Bradley’s father in a boardroom.

I arranged a meeting with Julian the next morning.

We met at an exclusive, members-only club in downtown Chicago. Julian was sitting in a leather booth, swirling a glass of bourbon. He was strikingly handsome, with dark hair, piercing eyes, and an aura of lethal intelligence.

"I wondered how long it would take you to call me," Julian said, gesturing for me to sit. "I heard Victoria Morgan paid you a visit. She has been very loud about her plans to destroy you."

"I am not easily destroyed, Mr. Sterling," I replied, taking the seat across from him. "I need fifty million dollars to clear a legacy debt. In exchange, I am offering you a fifteen percent minority stake in Lawson Ridge, plus a seat on the board."

Julian took a slow sip of his bourbon. "Lawson Ridge is a strong company. But going to war with Victoria Morgan is messy. She fights dirty. Why should I risk my capital on your vendetta?"

"Because it’s not just my vendetta," I said, leaning forward. "Five years ago, the Morgans boxed you out of the waterfront development deal using bribed city officials. I have the digital ledger proving it. Bradley left it on a server I seized during the divorce. Fund my company, and I will hand you the evidence you need to destroy the Morgan family’s real estate empire forever."

Julian stared at me. The arrogant, detached billionaire vanished, replaced by a man who recognized a true equal.

A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face.

"You aren't just a survivor, are you?" Julian murmured, leaning over the table. "You are an apex predator."

"I am whatever I need to be to protect my house," I answered.

Julian extended his hand. "We have a deal. But on one condition."

"Which is?"

"I don't just want a seat on the board," Julian said, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that sent a shockwave through my chest. "I want to be your strategic partner. Every move you make against Victoria, we make together."

I looked at his outstretched hand. I had sworn I would never rely on a powerful man again. But Julian wasn't asking for my submission. He was asking for an alliance.

I shook his hand. The war was officially on.
