Chapter 4: The White Swan's Mask

Mia finally found her voice, and her scream of pure, unadulterated terror tore through the frozen air of the Grand View Ballroom. The child used her small, grease-stained hands to claw at her eyes, trying to wipe away the burning gravy, but the action only smeared the food deeper into her face.

Julia stood up to her full height, lifting Mia effortlessly with her, anchoring the child against her hip. She allowed the greasy residue of the food to ruin her own dress, her eyes locking onto Margaret with a ferocious, protective fury she didn't know she possessed.

"Margaret!" Julia’s voice rang out, clear and sharp as a razor blade. "You pushed my daughter. She is eight years old, and she was actively apologizing to you! You are her grandmother—how dare you lay your hands on her and throw garbage at a child?!"

But Margaret Miller was not a simple brawler; she was a virtuoso of emotional terrorism. The moment Julia’s accusation left her lips, the monstrous rage on Margaret’s face vanished in the span of a single blink. Her spine curved into a frail, tragic slouch. Her manicured hand flew back to her throat, clutching her pearls, and tears—genuine, glistening tears summoned on command from a lifetime of manipulation—began to pour down her cheeks.

"Look at her! Everyone, look at what she is doing to me!" Margaret cried out, turning her torso away from Julia to face the sea of watching guests. Her voice was a trembling, masterfully pitched vibrato of wounded innocence. She wasn't speaking to her daughter-in-law; she was performing for her jury.

"She planned this... Julia taught that child to do this to me! She has spent the last year plotting to humiliate an old, grieving widow in front of the entire city! She has always hated me, always wanted to erase me from my own son's life, and now she uses a wedding to destroy my dignity!"

Bá ta khóc nấc lên (She sobbed), taking a dramatic, unsteady step backward as if her heart were failing her under the weight of the assault.

"She has completely poisoned my poor granddaughter’s mind, using a child as a weapon against her own flesh and blood! This is what she lives for—drama, attention, a horrific scene to destroy Rachel’s beautiful evening just so she can make herself the center of the universe!"

The speed of Margaret’s transformation was terrifyingly effective. The murmurs through the ballroom mutated from initial shock to speculative judgment. The high-society crowd, always hungry for a scandal but terrified of taking the wrong side, began to adjust their postures, leaning across tables to whisper their verdicts.

  • “Oh dear, did you see that? Could it be true?”

  • “Well, Julia never did quite fit into the family, did she?”

  • “To cause a scene like this at a wedding… absolutely classless.”

Julia felt a crushing, physical weight settle onto her chest. The world had inverted itself within minutes. The vicious abuser was weeping on stage for the town's pity, while the victimized child was being viewed as a prop in a calculated war. She looked toward the head table, where her cousin Rachel stood paralyzed, her hands pressed tightly over her mouth, tears ruining her bridal makeup as her special night dissolved into a family war zone.

"Mommy... I'm sorry... I didn't mean to do it..." Mia sobbed into Julia’s neck, her small frame still racked with convulsive shivers.

And right then, David Miller—Julia’s husband, Mia’s father—stood up from his seat.
