Chapter 5: The Collapse of a False Heaven

In the fraction of a second it took for David to step out from behind the linen tablecloth, a small, desperate ember of hope tried to spark inside Julia's chest. Her mind rushed back to the David of a decade ago—the boy with the luminous, protective smile who had stood under a freezing rain for three hours just to hand her a warm coat when she had a cold. The man who had held her hand tightly in front of his elite circle and declared, "I am choosing this girl, and I will protect her forever."
During their early years, he had constantly told her that his mother was an intense, overbearing woman, but that she meant well and possessed a good heart. Julia had swallowed that lie whole. She had endured ten years of emotional warfare because she believed in the good man she thought was trapped beneath David's submissive exterior.
But as David closed the distance between them, that ember of hope was completely stamped into the dirt. David's face held no fatherly panic for Mia, no righteous anger toward his mother's physical assault. His expression was a calculating, icy mask of pure, self-preserving cowardice. He didn't look at his daughter dripping with cold food; he locked his eyes onto Julia with a terrifying, transactional fury.
"Shut your mouth, Julia," David said, his voice a low, dangerous hiss that barely carried beyond their table, yet vibrated with absolute venom. "Look at what you've done to my mother. Look at the pathetic circus you've made of my sister's wedding. Haven't you caused enough embarrassment for this family?"
"What did you just say to me, David?" Julia whispered, the words freezing in her throat. "Are you truly blaming me? Your daughter was just assaulted in front of two hundred people!"
"I am telling you to stop this disgusting act!" David suddenly raised his voice, projecting it clearly for the surrounding tables. "My mother is an elderly woman. She may have reacted out of surprise, but this entire disaster is a direct result of your complete lack of proper parenting! If you actually knew how to raise a child with manners, we wouldn't be standing in a pile of garbage!"
"David! Are you even a human being?! Are you her father?!" Julia screamed, her voice breaking under the weight of the ultimate betrayal.
The answer David gave her was instantaneous, brutal, and unforgivable. His right arm vung lên (vung lên) through the air, carrying the full, unchecked velocity of a weak man trying to prove his total submission to his mother's empire.
...!!!
The sound of David's open palm striking Julia’s left cheek was sharp, loud, and entirely metallic. It echoed off the high ceilings of the ballroom like a gunshot, cutting through the ambient noise of the crowd. The force of the blow snapped Julia’s head violently to the side, her curls falling across her face to obscure her eyes. A white-hot, throbbing heat exploded across her skin, a physical handprint of pure betrayal swelling instantly against her cheek.
A bridesmaid at the head table screamed. The sound of a wine glass shattering against a plate echoed from the back of the room. The entire ballroom dropped into a state of absolute, paralyzed horror. A scion of the Miller family had just struck his wife in a public room to validate his mother's tyranny.
But Julia did not fall. She clamped her teeth together, drawing iron into her veins, using every ounce of maternal instinct to anchor her feet into the polished wood. She refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing her collapse into a victim. She slowly turned her head back around, brushing her hair from her eyes, and looked her husband dead in the eyes.

He stood there, his chest heaving, his eyes daring her to react. He was waiting for her to do what she always did: burst into tears, lower her head, and beg for his forgiveness just to preserve the "sanctity" of their hollow marriage.
But the compliance was dead. The performance was over.
