Chapter 6: The Order of the Winter Night

Julia did not shed a single tear. The fire of pure, unadulterated maternal fury had scorched away the capacity for sorrow. She could feel the rhythmic throbbing of her cheek where David’s handprint was burning into her skin, but her mind was completely detached, functioning with an icy, lethal precision. She looked down at her right hand, where her smartphone was still gripped tightly.
The screen was lit. The call that had been open for the last thirty minutes was still active.
"Julia? I am still here. I heard everything. Are you safe?" the voice of Daniel Carter vibrated through the small speaker. It was a voice detached from the emotional chaos of the ballroom—calm, professional, and terrifyingly authoritative. He had been on the line for the entire nightmare. He had heard Margaret’s screams, Mia’s terror, and the sharp, undeniable sound of the slap that David had delivered to his own wife.
Julia raised the phone to her lips, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the ballroom like a diamond slicing through glass:
"Send them in, Daniel. All of them. Right now."
A momentary pause on the other end, followed by the crisp, distinct sound of a leather folder being snapped shut. "Understood. We are crossing the threshold of the main lobby now."
The call ended. David’s eyebrows knit together, a sudden, sharp flicker of unease piercing through his arrogant mask when he saw the absolute, frozen calm on his wife’s face.
"Who the hell was that?" David growled, stepping closer, his hand reaching out to snatch the device from her fingers. "What pathetic game are you trying to play now?"
Julia didn't flinch. She locked her eyes onto his, her gaze becoming a pair of deep, black voids. "An investigator, David. Someone your entire parasitic family should have been kneeling to a long time ago."
"You are completely bluffing to save your own face!" Margaret shouted from behind him, having quickly wiped her face clean of the fake tears, her haughty, aristocratic posture returning in full force. "Everyone, look! The girl has lost her mind! She has humiliated herself and now she is trying to intimidate us with imaginary threats!"
At that moment, the lead wedding coordinator and two burly security guards arrived at the table, their faces drenched in anxious sweat. "Mr. and Mrs. Miller, please... we cannot have this continue in the main hall. You are disrupting the event. Please follow us to the private VIP suite in the back so we can handle this quietly."
Quietly. The word brought a cold, devastating smile to Julia’s lips. She knew exactly why they wanted privacy. The Miller family owned this town; their capital ran the local banks and funded the local politicians. They were accustomed to purchasing silence, to burying their atrocities behind heavy mahogany doors where Margaret could abuse her with impunity and David could strike her without social consequence.
"There is no need for privacy," Julia’s voice boomed through the ballroom, effortlessly shutting down the coordinator. "We are staying right here. In the light."
"Julia! Stop this absolute madness!" David snarled, lunging forward to grab her upper arm. "You are actively destroying my sister's life!"

Julia looked from his hand on her arm down to Mia, who was trembling against her hip, still covered in the greasy remains of the dinner.
"No, David," Julia said, her voice dropping to a level of terrifying finality. "Your mother destroyed this wedding the second she launched a child onto the floor. And you... The moment you raised your hand against me, you officially buried this family
