Chapter 3 - THE PEDIATRICIAN WROTE DOWN HER WORDS

Emma’s pediatrician saw us Monday afternoon.

The marks had darkened into bruises.

Nothing severe enough to require hospitalization.

Still evidence.

The doctor photographed them with my permission.

Then she spoke to Emma gently.

“Do you know how you got these marks?”

Emma nodded.

“Grandma hit me.”

“What with?”

“A belt.”

“Why?”

Emma looked down.

“I spilled juice.”

Then:

“I said sorry.”

My throat tightened.

The doctor asked:

“What happened after?”

Emma’s answer destroyed me.

“Daddy said I had to say sorry better.”

The doctor stopped writing for half a second.

Then continued.

“Did Daddy hit you?”

“No.”

“Did he try to stop Grandma?”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

Then:

“He was mad at Mommy.”

There.

Six years old.

Already understanding alliances.

The pediatrician documented everything.

A mandated report followed.

I did not celebrate that.

Nothing about a child-protection report feels victorious.

May you like

It means something happened that should never have happened.
