Chapter 4 - JASON HAD BEEN PREPARING FOR ME TO LEAVE
The financial records got worse.
Our savings had not simply been drained randomly.
The transfers increased whenever Jason and I argued.
That pattern mattered.
Eleven months earlier, I told him I wanted us to start couples counseling.
Four days later:
$5,000 to Whitmore Holdings.
Seven months earlier, after I told Carol she could no longer discipline Emma physically—
$7,500 transferred.
Three months earlier, after I told Jason that if he kept giving Carol unrestricted access to our home, Emma and I might stay with Danielle—
$9,000 transferred.
Then the latest transfer.
Three days before the birthday.
$8,500 from Emma’s education account.
I stared at the timeline.
Rebecca said quietly:
“This may indicate motive, or it may not. We don’t overstate it.”
Fine.
But emotionally?
I understood exactly what I was seeing.
Every time I moved closer to saying no, Jason moved money farther away from me.
Then Rebecca found an email.
Jason to Carol.
Subject:
Lauren
Message:
If she actually leaves, we need to make sure she can’t freeze everything. Move what you can into the LLC and we’ll sort ownership later.
I stopped breathing.
“How did you get this?”
“Produced through counsel after we issued preservation demands related to the financial dispute.”
I reread it.
Not:
We need to protect family assets fairly.
Not:
We need legal advice.
Move what you can.
Another message from Carol:
Once it’s under Whitmore, she can scream all she wants.
My hands began shaking.
For the first time, the birthday party looked different.
Maybe Carol believed she could hit Emma because nobody had ever stopped her.
Maybe Jason backed her because defending his mother had always been easier than defending us.
But underneath all of it was another truth.
They had already imagined me leaving.
