Chapter 7 - EMMA THOUGHT GRANDMA HIT HER BECAUSE SHE WAS BAD
This became the part I hated most.
Not money.
Not lawyers.
Emma’s belief.
One night at Danielle’s house, she asked:
“If Grandma only hits bad kids, does that mean I’m bad?”
I put down the book I was reading.
“No.”
“But Daddy said I needed consequences.”
I took a slow breath.
“Adults can be wrong.”
“Daddy too?”
“Yes.”
That answer hurt.
But protecting Jason’s image at Emma’s expense would only repeat the family pattern.
She needed truth appropriate for six.
“Daddy should have stopped Grandma.”
Emma stared at me.
“Why didn’t he?”
“I don’t know exactly.”
I could have said he was weak.
Enmeshed.
Manipulated.
Cowardly.
None of that belonged on a six-year-old’s shoulders.
So I said:
“He made the wrong choice.”
She thought for a while.
Then:
“Can he make a better one?”
There it was.
Children still hope.
“Yes.”
“But he has to choose it.”
Emma nodded.
Then asked me to keep reading.
That became our rule.
No adult automatically became a monster.
No adult automatically received forgiveness.
