Chapter 2 - THE INJURY PATTERN DID NOT CARE WHO PATRICIA BLAMED
The police arrived shortly afterward.
Officer Melissa Grant took my statement while another officer spoke separately with Daniel and Patricia.
I told the truth exactly as I remembered it.
Lily was crying.
Patricia came out of the guest bedroom angry.
She said I was spoiling the baby by picking her up too quickly.
I told her newborns could not be spoiled by comfort.
She called me disrespectful.
Then she slapped me.
I lost balance.
Lily fell.
No embellishment.
No guess about Patricia’s intention.
She slapped me.
The fall followed.
That was enough.
A nurse photographed the swelling on my cheek.
Dr. Blake documented the timing.
Then something small happened that became important.
Daniel told police:
“I didn’t actually see the slap.”
Patricia immediately said:
“Exactly.”
I stared at him.
Daniel looked sick.
He had entered the hallway seconds afterward.
Maybe he truly had not seen her hand make contact.
But he had seen my face.
Seen Lily on the floor.
He had heard Patricia say I dropped her.
And he had still hesitated.
Patricia mistook Daniel’s uncertainty for protection.
She leaned into it.
“Emily hasn’t slept properly in weeks. She’s exhausted.”
Officer Grant asked:
“Does exhaustion explain the mark on her face?”
Patricia stopped.
Then:
“She may have hit something when she fell.”
My cheek had been struck before I moved.
But Patricia was already editing.
That would become her biggest mistake.
