Chapter 5 - LILY OPENED HER EYES

Thirty-six hours after the fall, Lily opened her eyes.
I was sitting beside the incubator-like hospital crib with my hand resting near her foot.
Not touching.
Just there.
Her eyelids fluttered.
Then opened.
I stopped breathing.
“Lily?”
Her eyes moved without focusing.
I called the nurse.
Everything happened quietly after that.
Doctors.
Lights.
Checks.
No movie miracle.
No immediate smile.
No dramatic recovery.
But she responded.
Her pupils reacted.
She moved both arms.
Later, she cried.
I had never been so grateful to hear a baby cry.
I bent over the crib and sobbed.
A nurse smiled.
“Good lungs.”
“Yes.”
The neurologist remained cautious.
Lily had suffered a serious concussion and intracranial bleeding that had stabilized without surgery.
Developmental follow-up would be necessary.
Nobody promised she would have zero long-term effects.
I accepted uncertainty.

Uncertainty was still better than the silence on our hardwood floor.
