Chapter 4 - DANIEL’S TEXTS WITH HIS MOTHER

The camera proved Patricia had lied about the slap.

The texts revealed something else.

Daniel had been complaining to his mother about me for weeks.

Nothing criminal.

Still painful.

Emily won’t let anyone help with Lily.

Patricia:

She thinks motherhood makes her an expert.

Daniel:

She’s tired all the time.

Patricia:

Then you need to take control before she turns the baby into another one of her emotional projects.

I read that message twice.

Another exchange occurred four days before Lily fell.

Patricia:

If she raises her voice to me again in your house, I will handle it myself.

Daniel:

Just don’t start a war.

Not:

Do not touch my wife.

Not:

This is our home too.

Just:

Don’t start a war.

When confronted, Daniel cried.

“I didn’t think she meant physically.”

Maybe he didn’t.

But he had spent months feeding Patricia resentment while expecting me to absorb the consequences politely.

He had not caused the slap.

That truth mattered.

Another truth mattered too.

He had helped build the room in which Patricia felt entitled to deliver it.
