Chapter 9 - MY MARRIAGE DID NOT SURVIVE, BUT DANIEL’S FATHERHOOD DID

Daniel and I divorced when Lily was fourteen months old.
People were surprised.
Some thought his apology should have been enough.
Some said Patricia was the real problem.
Both arguments missed the point.
A marriage does not end only because someone is evil.
Sometimes it ends because something essential becomes visible too late.
I could forgive Daniel’s hesitation.
I could not rebuild the kind of intimacy marriage required.
He eventually understood.
Our custody arrangement prohibited Patricia from unsupervised access and required clear boundaries.
Daniel complied.
Not grudgingly.
Consistently.
That mattered.
He became a better father after he stopped treating his mother’s feelings as something everyone else had to organize their lives around.
I became able to respect that.
From a distance.
We learned something adulthood should have taught us earlier:
A person can fail terribly as a spouse and still work to become a decent co-parent.
